  • Right-hand drill = less power?

Just got back from the range where I'd been experimenting with different things.

I seemed to notice that I got a lot less power when using the right-hand drill when compared to relaxing my wrists in the down-swing and through impact.

My accuracy is generally all over the place, so it's hard to say whether this makes my shots less accurate, but relaxed wrists and whipping the club through impact gave lots more power.

Or am I doing something wrong?

You are yes. The RHD is supposed to also be a relaxed position. It seems tense to start because you are forcing it there, but after a while it gets relaxed the more comfortable you feel with it there.

The power still comes from wrists releasing from a loaded/cocked position. It's that the wrists are moving up/down rather then your side-to-side movement.

I was hoping that Greg would get first reply.

My shots actually increased in power with the RHD. Prior to the drill I would hit my PW about 110yds after some forward roll, but after using the RHD I now hit it about 140yds and it stops where it hits. I had similar gains in all my clubs (except putter ).

I was shocked so I emailed Greg directly to ask "what the f**k". He asked if I was delofting the club (much lower flight), but my PW was still rediculously high, so NO.

I figure that I was finally able to have my hands ahead of the ball at impact and hitting down on the ball.

Just so you know. One of the tendons on the back of my lead/left wrist was sore for about 2 weeks because I was still trying to swat the ball, but my right hand was keeping it in place. Both hands are now educated so there is no pain.

OK, I'll give it another try next time

The natural release seems to pull my wrists side-to-side towards the target as opposed to up-and-down... I guess this is the swatting you talk about?

I found I got more power, accuracy, and most importantly more consistency using Greg's RHD, and it was right from the outset.
          Cheers.

            Greg is correct,

With any change you tend to loose a little power because your consentration is on the movements of the body, not on hitting the shot.

It's like learning to ride a bike, you keep forcing it over and over agin then once you relax it happens

Stick with it, this is one of the most positive moves in golf, no matter which pro you watch they all achieve this position.
