  • Acceleration and back swing

    Hi Pro,

I am about a year old to the game. I am not young either! I have a couple of problems.

One is that I somehow tend to decelarate as I come to hitting the ball. This leads to hitting behind the ball or a very feeble hit. What can I do to prevent this.

Secondly, if I keep my left arm a bit flexible, I feel that somehow the plane of the swing is changing during backswing for long irons and woods. This again leads to all sorts of problems but mostly I end up dragging the ball to the left during my tee shots.

    Your advise please

    Thanks

    tnsekhar,

I might be able to help with the "feeble hit". It sounds like you are out of the sequence of motion a little. The decleration is being caused by a lack of a weight shift to the left before swinging through to impact. This is commonly called casting. The motion of casting is not a bad thing it is just happening at the wrong time in the swing.

The first thing you need to do on the down swing is lift your right heel into the Z position. This will rotate the right shoulder from a high position to a low position. The right arm and right wrist are then straigthened through the impact zone. This is the casting motion done in the proper place in the sequence of motion.

Senior golfers should also turn the right foot out a little more, maybe a 10 -15 degree angle. This will allow the hips to swing a little more free and allow the left arm to be straighter. A narrower stance will also promote a free hip turn. Beware this can be overdone.
