What is going on with me, I wonder?

    #1:

I just got a hold of some pics from our tournament last weekend. Much to my dismay, I see that I am leaning back on my follow through, especially on tee shots with my woods. This might explain why I am hitting these low flying shots off the tee that make decent distance but also feel like I am on the edge of doing something terrible.

What worries me is that I don’t feel as though I am leaning back. If I hadn’t have seen the pics, I would have assumed that I was just contacting the ball wrong because of something else.

What can I do to practice making sure that I am pivoting correctly? Something that doesn’t require a photographer following me around the course.

I am at a loss as to what I can do about my flubbed shots at about 60 to 80 yards of the green, especially those that have water sitting in front of them. Either I completely screw them up by hitting behind the ball (or by coming in mid-ball) and pushing them into the water, or I do get under them but pull the ball right heavily (I’m a lefty),thus leaving me 20 to 30 yards right of my intended target.

I do get some right on occasion, but I can't figure out what the difference is so that I can continue honing in on what works. Each swing feels the same in the backswing, but somewhere slip in the follow through, oer so I assume.

I try to fix one problem and the other comes up ad nauseum.

    Cheers!

sounds as though the ball is behind the center of your stance, it should not be, even half shots should be centered.

Can you take some video's of your swing and upload here. Thats the best way to get good advice from this site. It helped my swing loads when I posted some.

Dadvocate - with your first problem - difficult to diagnose without looking at your swing, but i suspect if you are leaning back it may be a small sort of reverse pivot. Try getting more behind the ball at the top of your swing.

With your second one - i hate it when i do this - so frustrating. One cause if this (when i do it) is that my body stops turning and the hit comes with the hands and not the body. If you have ball centre of your stance, take a three quarter swing and set the wrists and then turn through with the body its actually almost impossible to flub.

        hope that helps

          Nick

If i may guess they might be the same problem, you are leaning right back and scooping the ball, which may also be why you are struggling with the short irons too

My guess is that you may have a armsy takeaway and not getting good extension on the backswing. From here you left arm breaks down and is too close to your head at the top. You then have to lean back to feel like you get width coming into the ball and this also leads to your block/push to the right with your short irons

On the takeway try and feel its your left hand 'pushing' the handle back, so that when the club is parallel to the ground your triangle is still intact, your left arm is straight, the club head in front of your hands and you 'feel', like you are almost being pulled off the ball such that the weight is on your right foot. Now from here simply feel like your wrists hinge up (Gregs right hand drill) but make sure your hands dont go nay highher than your shoulders and the left arm stills feels really extended. What you are trying to get to is to have your hands as far away from your head as you can with your left shoulder over your right knee. It will feel like a much shorter backswing because its not long and disconnected

Now from there simply swing through the ball hard with a full release keeping your head behind the ball

With the short irons you can then vary the chip/pitch length but make sure its that left hand that pushes the club back so the triangle is maintained and remember to release the club fully through the ball

            Re: Two swing related questions

agree with above. the key is too maintain the wrist angle as much as you can on the intial phase of the downswing while shifting weight to the front foot.

              Re: Two swing related questions

Couldn't comment on the 1st question but I'd guess a that a large number of short game problems (mine at least ) stem from deacceleration rather committing fully to the stroke

Here's some interesting notes about how to start that extension with the takeaway

                http://www.crokergolf.com/seniorgolfermarch.htm

Here's an execellent thread on why theres really no point in having the hands go higher than the shoulders on the backswing

                http://www.golf-tuition-online.com/v...ead.php?t=3224

And heres something from Leadbetter showing extension and the hands no higher than shoulders at the top. Hogan was the epitomy of this

pnearn - think you meant dadvocate not me in your earlier post

Dadvocate was talking about his problem with 60-80 yards shots - i think these shots have a pretty different technique to full shots which is what i was trying to get at but too lazy to type! However your assessment of reasons for leaning back was very interesting and may be the cause of the lean back i agree.

                  cheers

                      Re: Two swing related questions

seems to be very little focus on his problems being ball position How are you supposed to turn throgh the shot if it is too far back? NEVER BEHIND CENTER fix this issue and go from there. Even with chipping you do not need the ball behnind center if you have good technique.

you could be like me and so anxious to see where the ball is going you lift your head up before contact, keep a good aim where you want the club to slide under the ball

slide under the ball? the club is supposed to hit the ball in the ground unless it is a long iron or wood
