  • Casting/over the top

I've read some of the other threads about letting the club naturally come back down on the same plane as the backswing, but can any of the pros suggest a drill to create that feel, which helps to prevent casting? Also, of the many training aids out there to "cure" an over-the-top swing, which ones in your opinion really work? Thanks.

    Ledbetter does a great drill:

He has you take the club back to about 3/4. Then you start the down swing with your hips, shoulders and arms only (no hands at all) to about 1/4 slowly. You take it back to 3/4 and down to 1/4...doing this 3 times. Then on the 4th time, you take it to 100% and hit it.

This gets you the feel of a good "first move". Do this about 10 times (successfully). Then try it without the practice move. This will get you one the way there. If you still have problems, you might be having some reasons. Get me more info and we can go from there.

I think I may have discovered one of the reasons I tend to swing over-the-top, and it has to do with wrist hinge - I guess for some reason I have always fought the urge to hinge my wrists correctly, and until I read somewhere else on here about how the wrists should move, I had my own definition of hinging. I went out to the range today, and after hitting 70 balls the same way as before, I stepped back and slowly swung a 7-iron; it was then I realized that I was not hinging, but rather cupping. The result of the first few balls after correctly hinging?? BOOM!!!

It may not be my only reason for casting, but this was a great first step in ridding myself of it!
