Just wondering if anybody could tell me what different types of divots will tell me about my swing, or if there is a site that someone knows of that tells this. I keep making weird choppy divots, and i'm guessing it's because my swing is too vertical? Anyways, thanks.

Try this link. I thought it was very informative.

Re: Reading a Divot...
I always assumed that OF COURSE your divot should point at the target until I saw Colin Montgomerie on "playing lessons with the pros" calmy saying that all his divots point left of target.
Just one more thing about this damnable game that I don`t understand.

Re: Reading a Divot...
Mariner - i saw that wonderful playing lessons. What Monty was saying that because he cuts across the ball his divots would all be pointing left more than normal (he plays a fade). However a divot for any normal straight show should be relatively straight but slightly veer to the left at the end because the club is coming back inside.

Re: Reading a Divot...
Frabula - I dont think you really need a site - its fairly straightforward
ideal divot with 5 iron - kind of like a 1 dollar bill (5 quid if you are british). Not too deep. Any variation on that shows you your problem.
pointing to the left severely you are coming across it.
To right you are hitting in to out.
too deep you are too steep
no divot you are too shallow
the curve of the divot gives you some idea of the way the club head is pointing.
I recommend any John Jacobs book - he goes through how to diagnose shots from ball flight in practically every one and it really makes problem solving easier - much better to look at th ball for diagnosing swing problems. Hope this helps

Re: Reading a Divot...
thanks much for that information. actually, i do have one more question though. recently i've been making kind of "fluffy" divots, meaning they do pick the grass, but it doesn't actually make a divot. It's almost like i'm coming in too steep, but i'm not making any divot. It's really strange, something that i've never done yet. Any ideas as to what this could be?
