  • 2 Pros 2 different swing ideas about the takeaway.

Guys I would like your opinion.

I used 2 different pros and both have taught 2 different takeaways, which do you all prefer.

    1. The one piece takeaway is a first movement back with everything, hands, arms, shoulder, chest, even your hips, basically if you stuck the butt end of the club in your belly button and just turned all at once.

    2. The other pro also calls it a one piece takeaway, but only the hands arms shoulder initiate the turn, the hips stay completely square. The left arm then gets to a point across your left chest and then feel as if the left arm pulls the rest of your body around to the top of the backswing.

these 2 styles are vastly different, what is the modern day teaching.

    Hi Vestor,

It sound like there is a difference in comunication with the two pros, both are correct one just forgot to tell you to keep the hip as still as possible,

When you start your backswing your hips shouldn't move at all............this is a untruth really because you feel like they haven't moved but infact they move around 45 degrees, it is impossible not to move them.

Hope this clears this up for you.

    Ian.

I would do whatever you feel most comfortable with - try thema nd see which one you 'naturaly' gel too - I am guessing it would be one or the other.

A certain Mr Els starts his swing with arms only, nothing else.

A certain Mr. Els starts with his hands - a real 'no no' in the world of teaching pros. Maybe that's why Ernie hasn't won a major?

The guy who pimps the Impact bag makes a good point. The first 3/4 of any pro's swing is completely their own. But at impact, they all look the same.

I saw a pro who hated my 'snatch' away (starting with the hands), but also was teaching me to swing 2 plane.

Like nemo said, use the pro you're comfortable with, then follow their instruction.

Ernie Els has won 3 major championships.
Two U.S. Opens and 1 British Open.

Just to clarify - i didn't mean use the pro your most comfortable with I meant the technique - if your a body person start with your shoulders etc together - if you naturaly want to use arms only or hands then so be it.

From all the tour players who use all variations i can't see why it matters

Really? My bad. I thought he was one of those 'best that had never won a major'. Maybe he's one of those 'why can't he knock Tiger out of #1'?

My entire swing is hands/arms led. I lead with the arms/hands and the body (inc shoulders follow). Follows the Flick/Jones/De La Torre teaching method but I find it hugely simplifies the swing and gives me (personally) better distance and accuracy

I find if I takeaway with the hands I can ensure the first 18 inches are low and slow, thus building width. From there I increase speed to the top. Key when being hands led is not to yank the club to the inside but better players know that

must say I go with Ian on this one. If you move the hips at the same time as the shoulders, then how would you get any coil on a half shot? shoulders turn back and PULL hips, that is how you build up tension in the backswing.
