  • Setup Problem Fixed - Maybe of help to others?

    Hi

I have been playing for about 1 year now and due to a lot of work on my swing have improved quite a lot.

But like anyone there are times when it seems to fall into place and times when it doesn't.....no matter how hard you concentarte on the swing keys that had you striking it so pure only a few days ago.

Well it turned out for me my problem was bending my knees to much in my set up position, especially with the driver. And I'm not talking significant bend but clearly I was just bending that bit to much to allow my body to be stable and consistent through the swing.

Since Ive adjusted this by keeping my legs as straight as possible but still very alive through a small athletic bend i've had significantly more distance and consistency with driver (approx 40-50 yards) and in fact all clubs.

So as we all know set up is important its just surprised me that this small area of set up i've obvously overlooked for so long. Despite knowing it was my set up. I used to spend hours looking at ball position, width of feet etc.

Maybe it will help some of you who are at a loss to describe you're inconsistency.

Then again maybe its just me it helped.

    Cheers

Hi, You confirm what I have thought for many years, I.E. posture and grip are of prime importance. What do I mean by this? Find the address position and grip that works for you.Forget all the talk of how many knuckles you should show etc.The correct grip for you is the one that delivers the clubhead square to target line at impact.

I made a similar "discovery"...I was bending my knees too much at setup, in an effort to make my stance "athletic." Consequently, I would straighten them a bit at impact and top the ball. I found I couldn't control this tendency to straighten them, so I reduced the bend at setup and that helped a lot. The difference may be very subtle, but even a small difference can matter a lot, in terms of how the club face strikes the ball.

I now do a very quick bounce on the balls of my feet during setup to settle my legs into position.

Great thread - I just made this same discovery a week ago - I noticed on video that my right leg was straightening (not locking) at the top of my backswing. Because it was so flexed at address, there was no way I could keep it that flexed throughout my backswing. I would occasionally chunk and top and whatnot.

I now stand straghter at address, and ensure I'm not squatting too much by doing a quick bounce or two on the balls of my feet. I now have one swing thought for my backswing: I think of squeezing my left shoulder and right knee towards each other (I'm right handed) - it feels like a really powerful coiling move (and I've been hitting the ball better than ever).
