  • Inside out grip!

    Hi there!
I'm a complete novice who took up golf just a few weeks ago.
I'm left handed (I write left handed) But I shoot, throw a ball, fish etc, right handed - I also play golf right handed!
I've been struggling to get off the tee or the ground consistently no matter how I grip the club and, the other day, I changed my grip radically so that my left hand was BELOW my right! Voila - 150+yds off the tee and ground almost everytime! Question: do you think I should stay with this 'backwards' grip - or should I try to 'force' the 'proper' right hand grip?
One final point, after changing grips, I now slice instead of hooking! Golf!!!!

    Lefty,

I have heard of this left hand low for all shots. A friend of mine is from India. They teach this swing there. In most corners of the world you would be hard pressed to find a teacher that could help you improve with that swing.

You probably have 2 choices, convert or go it alone. The advise from a pro would be confusing at best.

      Inside out Grip

Hi Golfbald, thanks for your reply to my post.
I had a lesson with my Pro. yesterday and he says for me to go with my 'inside out grip' if thats how I feel comfortable. But I can tell he isn't happy trying to teach me! <G>
I think I'm going to get one of those training grips and have one last try at the 'proper' grip. If, after a while, it doesn't feel 'right' then it ain't and I shall revert to my own style and forge boldly ahead! :-)
Once again, thanks for taking the time to reply to my post.

        Lefty,

I was thinking about this last night, you might want to try a old driver or get a old used driver not only put a training grip on it but weight the head. I know they make a weighted bean bag that velcros onto a club, or have a clubmaker put sand or lead in the head.

Swing this everyday, 3 times a day about 20-25 swings. Release your right arm and wrist through the swing. Do not swing fast just let the weight release it naturally. Do not use a Momentus club, it must be head weighted.

Do this for 21 days. If it doesn't work, go to left hand low. But I'm thinking if you let your muscles train your brain, you will be able to make the change.

          Hi Golfbald,
Again, many thanks for taking the time to reply to my post.
That sounds like a good idea - getting the club head weighted. I think that it may be the way to go. I'll get the training grip first and begin working with that, then try to sort out the weighted club as soon as I can.
A professional I spoke to a while back seemed to think that a lot of Irish players use my 'upside down' grip and apparently it works fine for them.
I'll let you know how things go!

Again, many thanks for your help :-)

            Hi again Golfbald!
Well, I went away and I worked on my grip and I'm happy to say that I now play all my off-green shots using the 'proper' right handed grip! I putt left hand low, but that works just fine for me and I find my putting is pretty accurate done this way.
Many thanks once again for your advice regarding ways to sort my grip.
Now all I need to do, is to sort out the Gazillion and one other faults I have with my swing, stance, aim, mental approach etc - and I'll be fine! :-)

              Hi Lefty,

Good to hear from you again. Sounds like you are making good progress. Glad to hear it.

There is a photo lesson on the home page under drills that might help you with some of those gazilion things. I know what you mean there is always a good laundry list of things to work on at any level.

Hi Golfbald, thanks for your reply.
I went to my local driving range this morning and apart from my grip - which felt pretty okay - I had problems with just about all of the other Gazillion things that I mentioned in my last post!
Ah well, if it was easy; everybody would be doing it, eh?

                Regards
                Lefty.
