  • That Samaritan's number again?

Without walking away - which I suppose is an option on the range - what do you all do when everything goes totally Pete Tong and you are standing there without a golf swing?

Any "back to basics" drills or tips gratefully received.

Well, you could start hitting balls with your feet together. If you're not in balance, you'll fall over.

hit the ball whilst humming - if you stop humming at impact your swinging to hard and out of tempo - swing with tempo and you will manintain your hum.

I tried it, it works! I've always held my breath on the down swing and powered through the ball. Result, a death grip on the club and topping the ball. This trick has relaxed my wrists and arms, try OOOOMMMMMM

Try this; Feet together, 9i, 1/2 swings, then 3/4.

It is possible to go through a whole game with half swings, no? You'll probably lose 20-30% distance across but for me the half swings are never worse than the full swings (in terms of accuracy or rather straightness especially).

In addition to humming whilst hitting, try and chip balls with your mouth open. I wasn't breathing when chipping - quite tense. My coach suggested chipping with my mouth open. This helps the breathing, ie, less tension. At times I apply it in all aspects of my game.

As for back to basic tips - I'd go back to my coach for help.

            Good luck.

              Thanks.

I'll try the narrow stance 3/4 swing 9I next time.

I play regauraly with a guy who never swings it back more than half way and he plays off 5. Always takes the money. Always in the fairway

If you can drive it 220 and hit an 8i 130 you can play to par if your short games great

                  Gents,

What's the theory behind the narrow stance and half swings with the 9 iron?

                  Cheers

                    Re: That Samaritan's number again?

It would seem to me mainly for weight transfer and balance. As a beginner I think the biggest problem is hitting it clean on the course since I'm more used to hitting on the range where it is always level. So once you start experiencing different kind of lies and each one is different from the previous, it can get all out of whack The half swings works best when this happens to me...

I think it's a simple as there is less room for error - any monkey can hit a 9 iron with all that loft. That's why you see non golfers shooting low scores around pitch & put courses.

Also most swing problem (I beleive) are in the last half of the backswing and the first half of the downswing - all your slices are made in this area.

Of course it alsos tops you trying to hit the skin off your ball which always helps tempo and shotmaking.

I don't see any benefit playing your normal game with a short swing - kind of like only playing half the game.

Although must be some benefit to swinging half 9 iroins when waiting for a hole to clear..

                        Re: That Samaritan's number again?

I had an attack of the Hosel rockets a while ago, and I found that just putting the ball down and stepping up and swinging worked fine. I wasn't moving my weight on to the right foot on the backswing and I was becoming more tense seeing seeing little white cruise missiles hit the side fence a yard off the ground.
Humming and only half concentrating can really relax you, as can swinging two clubs a couple of feet above the ground.
