  • Driver Problems..

Hi all.. Just after a small bit of advice.

Like so many other high handicap players I'm having problems with my driver, YES.. I'm slicing.

I can hit all of my other clubs fine, including my 3 wood, it's just the driver I'm having problems with. I know it's probably caused by either an out-to-in path or an open clubface but I'm not sure which is the problem so I don't know what to work on fixing.

The ball flight starts nice and straight with a good height and distance but about half way into the flight it starts to curve right (sometimes only slightly, other times massively).

    Any advice is appreciated.

usually when mine start straight and then curver my clubface is open but swing path good, try a stronger grip

Also, you may be hanging on to the club and not releasing...or bringing the hands too far forward then releasing.

A slice that starts out nice and straight for me is a sign I am right there where I need to be and am just a bit off. Usually, this is because I had release problems.

Also, trying looking at ball position. Too far back and I'm hitting a little early, thus open.

I like the ball tee'd just a bit higher than normal (3/4 of ball over top of Driver) and playing off big toe. I am the club face, stand with feet together and ball at big toe and then move my right foot only to the right and take a wider than iron shot stance.

For me, it is one of the two above. The release can be somewhat complicated in that it can be too much grip pressure, hanging on too long and chicken winging or sliding my hands too far in front of the club leaving the face open.

First check your alignment. If you are aligned too far to the left you will slice the ball. And second, I believe you are right in thinking you are coming across the line. Try starting the downswing with the lower body but keep the shoulders facing the ball as long as possible ie. the X-factor.

are the specs on your driver very different from your other clubs. too stiff a shaft and too low a loft can contribute to this problem

            Re: Driver Problems..

You might want to try standing a little bit further away from the ball. The driver is that much longer than other clubs but the temptation can be to stand a similar distance from the ball. This might be the reason every other club is okay except your driver.

Also, what happens to your left wrist at the top of the swing (assuming you are right handed)? You can get away with cupping your left wrist with most clubs and still hit reasonable shots, but not the driver - your left wrist must be flat - and if you are a habitual cupper (I know I am!) keeping your left wrist flat will feel very different.

Look at Tiger's left wrist - does yours look like this at the top of the swing? (sorry it's so small):

Lots of tips and advice there guys.. Thanks a lot.

I'm going to spend an hour at the range tomorrow night and pay better attention to my stance, grip, alignment, cupped wrist etc (wow.. lot's to watch for).

I'll post here on my progress (or lack of it )

Pick up a copy of Golf Digest. Each issue has a stop action examination of a pro's swing. My fav was VJ's last year. They're very informative. If you have video of your swing compare to one of these or a model swing.

If at impact your clubface open it would produce a push/slice. You said your shots initially fly straight, this would indicate your swing path is out to in and cutting across the ball.

Would that only apply if you are a single-plane swinger like VJ?

I use to quite the same problem like u .. first I tought it was my swing path ... but after using a club fitter's mat ... i found out that my swing path was in to out .. and it was a constant in to out ... next using a video cam .. my friend found out that it was during impact, my club face was open ....

after that I tried with a strong grip and lock my right wrist ... it solve my problem for the time being ... as this seems to be just a quick fix .... and of coz my distance suffered as well ( from a average of 240M to 210M ) ... but in the end .. who cares as long as the call goes where I wants it to go ? ..

currently still trying to fix my driver ... use a video cam .. it really helps ..

                          A very wise observation.
