Re: Immediate cure for coming over the top

Yes, the old ball is the mental block, that you have to get over and imagine you are swinging through and not hitting the back of!

The swing IMO is really just a throwing motion but to do it right you need to have all your body make this motion not just your arms. Keeping your head back and throwing your hips/arms around a fixed point (your head if you like) has helped me

A good thought is just to feel as if you are going to throw the clubhead a long way by swinging the handle of the club. As you start down you can feel how you would do this by starting this throwing motion with your lower body leading the arms

I would guess that the better players on GTO (Ian, Greg, Shootin etc) dont think about much else other than swinging the clubhead on their downswings (but I might be wrong obviously ). Id be surprised if they deliberately tried to force anything with their hips, legs etc

I will try this week end... i have the same problem ext/int which give me fade or slice on driver...

Re: Immediate cure for coming over the top

Mariner's tip, Normans Secret, and the RH drill have me hitting a consistent draw with my irons for the first time in my ten years of playing golf. I have always had good posture, grip, and overall setup. However, the OTT move coming down has always voided all of it. Now - I believe I have finally realized the "move" of a solid golf swing. Great thread/great advice!
BTW - I say this with caution, I understand that tomorrow's another day and golf is golf! Cheers.....

Excellant point, my best shots are the effortless ones.

I tried, one shot in draw very good, and 2 or 3 medium... but it's so strange to not look at the ball...

I have a competition tommorrow, so i didn't change my swing today, i will retry...

This was an interesting thread from 14 or so months ago. Mariner, are you still using this method? The OTT swing is always lurking, it seems. This idea seemed, and still seems, pretty unconventional.

Google that video, "Gary Player analyzes
                  Tiger Woods' Swing"
Someone on this site found it and
it was a big help to me.

I drifted away from it, went back to it when things got bad again, but now I've learned to go with the legs and body and "leave the arms behind" and have never hit the ball better, though I'm struggling to score as I keep knocking shots over the back of the green.
I read Dave Pelz's short game bible and I'm really trying to concentrate on my wedges from 100 yards and in at the moment.

                      Hi Mariner,

Funny you should mention that, because I have been doing that progressively over the last 8 months. Since it was slowly developing in my game play, I didnt get that joy of eureka! that you are facing now.

yes! its true, concentrate & seeing the downswing matching the upswing, eyes on 8 o'clock & just swing through does wonders for me too. I have recently even stop looking at the ball on the downswing. Just focusing on a beautiful swing plane till followthrough & let the ball get in the way along that swing.

Re: Immediate cure for coming over the top

Could all this be caused by the chin getting in the way and blocking the back swing, and turning the head is getting it out of the way.?

Re: Immediate cure for coming over the top

I don't think so in my case, hopefully I'm nearly cured but I was suffering from an over-dominant right arm and could only conceive of hitting at the ball with it.
Now my swing is just a body turn with virtually dead arms and hands and I've never hit the ball better.
