Am interested in finding further explanations and drills to practice supination of left hand and the roll the right hand might play in the impact zone. am badly suffering a lack of release at impact. have read the "hogan" explanations and leadbetters follow up in "fundamentals of hogan" and understand the concept of supination but am a bit surprised at the lack of explanations when i search the net. any posts would be appreciated. peter.

Re: Supination
I generate the release based on 2 items. Full hip and shoulder rotation through before impact, and the action of the wrists to maintain a vertical hinge only (no horizontal action).
My drills are here:

Re: Supination
Dear Motoralpha,
I'll add my two cents worth for ya'.
Greg gives and excellent description on what this should feel like and what you should be doing. I worked with his "right-hand" drill, which is an excellent drill in it's own rite. But in spite of all this, I just never got the real feel until I got one of Greg Norman's "The Secret". It is a piece of plastic that forces you to maintain the cupped right wrist through impact, just as Greg's drill explains.
Once you get the feel of all this it's like night and day. For me, it took a long time. I don't think it's natural at first. What felt natural to me was what Greg calls "swatting". It is such a weak move.
If you can't get "the secret" and are having trouble getting the feeling using the "Right hand drill", try the cheap route. Get a spatula and tape it to your right hand (assuming you are right handed) with the handle running up your right arm with the metal piece laying flat against the BACK of your hand. Now when you swing, try to keep your hand flat against the metal part. THis will maintain the ANGLE which is SO important in this concept. Pretty soon, you will begin to feel that you MUST move your hips and shoulders through in order to hit the ball, but MAN WHAT A FEELING. Remember, the wrists are the ignitors of the golf swing.
Another important thing, you must keep your left arm fairly straight though impact, with the back of the left hand (or the watchface) facing the target. The natural inclination is to "Chicken wing" it and that totally robs your swing of distance and accuracy, also keep you hands low. Once you experience this great feel you will know what I am talking about.
I hope all this makes sense and helps. I am just passing along some info that really helped me and hope it can help someone else.
Good luck,
Chessbum....

Re: Supination
Excellent drill, Greg for the cupped right hand. You read all the books telling you to do this, but it never clicks until you see it illustrated in motion. Thanks

Re: Supination
i have been practising the "right hand drill' which has worked. i am not sure how i can explain this in words but i will try.
i have found that if i "set my hands early" and then return to "the hand set" position on the downswing the release just seems to hapopen. by setting my hands earlty i mean the following. will this is the drill i have been using.
take normal stance with the 7 iron and take the club back so it is paralel to the ground and the butt is pointing at the target. this forms a very strong "cupped" right hand position i have found. i hold that position with the butt of the club pointed at the target and shaft parallel with the ground. this occurs for me when my hands are basically level with my right hip or just outside my left leg {am right handed} see "the right hand drill video" and imagine where the hand position is when greg returns the club to the ball and that is where i "hold position" on the way back. i did say this was hard to explain. from this "held position" i simple lift my arms up to about a 3/4 swing and then just try to return my hands keeping right wrist cupped to the original "held" position with shaft parrel to the grond and butt pointing at target. from there the club just "seems" to release automatically and ball contact has improved 100 percent. i have always struggled to find a way to start downswing anbd this seems to work. all i concentrate is getting my hands to the original "held position. lol not sure if this is correct in theory but it is working a treat and suddenly i dont have to even think of trying "to hit" the ball. club jusr releaqses do to pressure of right hand been held in cup position.
await posts with anticipation.
ps. will try to post photos if i can work out how.

Re: Supination
Personally I think supination and right hand 'lag'/compression comes naturally from the pulling motion in the downswing. What leads this pulling motion is different for different players. Some pull with their hips, some with their left shoulders, some with the arms pulling down and around. The key is to keep the wrists and hands tension free and resist the temptation to swat/flick/hit/turn forearms over etc
The key is learning where and when to pull the clubhead through the ball and this differs between a 1PS and 2PS. What the secret and the spatula do is force you not to hit/swat with your hands in the release. A light grip is also crucial as if you try and hold on through impact the wrists wont release naturally leaving the clubface open

Re: Supination
rotate left forearm from the top, right arms straightens automatically
Explain in more detail please. I have been doing this drill for a couple days and concentrating on rotating my shoulders the 180 degrees as a cue. Is that incorrect? I have not been able to hit balls with it yet, but the feeling is completely new to me (a swatter). It is a solid thump at impact that feels very powerful.

Re: Supination
I have been taking golf lessons for the last couple of years with some very modest improvement. I am a 25 handicap, I hit the ball a country mile, my yardages are consistent, and I try very hard to think my way around the course. The problem is that it's only rarely that I can put together a string of straight shots that are on line to the target.
During one of my lessons, my instructor said, "You're relying on timing to hit the ball." No other insight was offered. I senced that I was not using my wrists correctly because I was having alot of difficulty getting my "watch" to face down the target line through impact and would finish my swing with the dredded chicken wing posture.
Understanding that it is the hip rotation that brings properly cocked wrists down the target line is a real insight for me. Thanks to Greg, I think I now know how to put it together.
