  • Distance with Irons

I really don't get it. I can hit my woods pretty far, but my mid irons go about as far as my short irons. It's driving me nuts.

Yesterday I played Birdsfoot north of Pittsburgh (an wonderful course but a bit $$$), and I shot a 91. My buddies shot about 97 and 100. I'm usually around the low nineties, and very very consistently. 90, 91, 92. That's me. If I could get more distance on my irons I now I could be in the 80's regularly. Here's my typical distances, and I'm not making this up.

    Driver - 225
    3W - 200
    5W - 180
    9W - 155
    11W - 135

    SW - 80-85
    PW - 90
    9i - 100
    8i - 110
    7i - 115
    6i - 120
    5i - 130
    4i - 140

This is driving me completely nuts!!! Any ideas or suggestions?
I'm short, but pretty strong. I have no idea why I can't hit my irons farther. Why could I hit a 9 wood a respectable distance, but not a 6 iron??? Could I be sweeping the irons? I usually leave a divot (usually a very big one), so I don't think so.

    Any ideas?

Out-To-In Swing Plane Leads to major distance loss

    Hi Surfside,

You are not alone here, this is a very common problem that I have seen a lot of. It is usually caused by an out-to-in swing plane which promotes a steeper angle of attack into the ball thus resulting in more spin and less distance, this gradually gets worse as the clubs get longer so you loose more distance with the long clubs than the short ones meaning they will go significantly less distance!

To address this problem you need to go to the many posts on 'slicing' the ball and look at the many fixes that we have posted. Basically you need to get the club coming into the ball more from the inside on the way down, promoting a shallower angle of attack into the ball and gainig a cleaner, better strike.

Type slicing into the search box and correct this fault for good. Let me know how you get on.
