  • Hands at address

Any thoughts on where they should be ideally, if there is an ideal?

Practising yesterday (sadly, my regular golfing partner was on decorating duty and not allowed out) I found that dropping my hands a little from the initial set up position seemed to improve the whole caboosh - direction and shape, trajectory and distance - but was it just a coincidence?

What effect would hand position have, if any? Or is as simple as creating a more relaxed arm? Is this an experiment worth persevering with?

bdbl - it shouldn't be an experiment IMO - you should continue to work on your posture until your hands are in the correct position. I like Butch Harmons drill of standing with a club in your posture then taking your bottom hand off the shaft and letting it hang. It should basically hang opposite where it should be on the grip - if it hangs further away from your body than the club is, your arms are too close to you at address. If it hangs nearer to your body your arms are too far away.

Its vital to nail posture as problems there always lead to problems in the swing.

    cheers

At address, keep your left arm straight, upper arm firmly against your chest. Your right arm should be bent, with upper arm firmly against your chest and in a near-vertical position depending on the club, forearm lifted slightly to more closely match the shaft angle. Take club away in the shaft plane. There you have a nice 1-plane setup, try it.
