    Re: Latest Lesson

    Nick,

Again you think you are not turning enough, I thought the same when I was shortening mine, TRUST ME YOU WILL BE TURNING ENOUGH".

You will find a faster sharper impact aswell.

You must trust it when you start working on it.

    Ian.

I agree with Ian and you'll coil.

If not already Nick, see it on video - amazing. It will negate any of your concerns.

I'd be interested to know how far you hit with the swing you have now to when you 'feel' you are only swinging half way back.

        Re: Latest Lesson

I found it interesting when I looked at my takeaway a year ago on video that I was already 75% fully coiled (in that my shoulders had already turned long way to get a good wide arc). If from there all you think about is keeping the width between your hands and head and just lifting the arms a little it feels way shorter than if you have been used to some huge turn, but really you are in the widest 'arc' possible in terms of how far your hands are from the ball

Heres a great article with some drills that may help you 'feel' this

Thanks both of you - I am without camera at the moment - after a brief period of borrowing my friends. Time to invest in one I feel!

My recent video highlighted a couple of problems i am working on (which lead to crossing the line IMO):
          1) Head moving forward in backswing then rising at top - trying to sort this by getting my posture more upright with weight on balls not toes
          2) looks like slightly bringing the club back on a flat plane - slightly flat at the top
          3) due to the above coming down a bit too steeply on the ball - hoping that better posture and trying to get a bit more connected with bottom elbow (left in my case being leftie) in front of chest will help 2 and 3 - not really getting anywhere with this yet though

          cheers

            1. weight should be balanced between balls and heels or favor the heels
            2. take care of number one first, with the weight too much on toes you subcociously make a flat swing to balance yourself
            3. too falt going back encourages over the top.

cause many people say "get in an athletic position" an athletic position gets you ready to go forward to catch a ball, on the golf swing we dont want to get ready to go forward. Maybe you need to stick your but behind you more.

Get in a position where you feel you could swing a baseball bat or a tennis bat its the same type of position, i.e. swinging from the side.

                    Ian

Going back to the hip turn we were talking about earlier in the thread I put myself on video yesterday (should really do this more often) to see why i keep pushing and it was interesting. Turns out my hips are turned out the way at impact and in fact they are clearing too fast meaning my shoulders/arms are getting stuck on the inside

Using my favoured principle of exaggeration I started transitioning with my upper body (my chest actually, swing thought being to turn the chest through the ball as in http://www.golfdigest.com/search/ind...304akins2.html
                    )

And lo and behold I was hitting it nice and straight again and this really straightened my driver out. Back on video my hips cleared a fraction slower allowing my shoulders/arms to be back in front of myself. I think trying to start the downswing with my lower body ruins my timing, personally I think I have to think upper body first as my lower body is automatically very active

                      Hi paul,

A good point, I have been looking on the digest site, it's very good and it covers alot about hip rotation.....................this is where we fall down in our interpretation of this move, I think both me and you are doing the same............throwing the hips forward in an attempt to turn.

Back to Gregs point and I have tried his theory and it works best for me, stand next to a door and take your set-up, swing back and into the impact position........of course if you slide you hit the door, when you do it a few times..........lol............. I know it feels silly.......lol...............but it works and gives you the FEELING required for a good turn.

Don't you just love prating about trying to perfect the swing, season starts up in Staffordshire this week so I will work on it very very slowly, because I have only just perfected the art of seperating practice from play.

                      AGRRRRRRRRRRRRR

                        Ian

This is where I think feel and real are so very different. If I try and 'feel' like I turn or shift my hips they either slide or go too fast. If I forget about them and just swing my upper body through the ball my hips seem to clear naturally, indeed at impact I am in Greg's impact position on the video although my right arm is maybe a touch too straight

The other key feel for me is to make sure I complete my backswing without getting too long. That is I have to make sure I turn my back whilst maintaining that wide arc at the top. It still feels short but I have to turn that back else my timing gets off and I tend to pull

All in all its fascinating stuff. Although I can see that if I had the video all the time I think i'd never play as id always find something wrong

                          Hi Paul,

This is the problem with video, you will notice a rarely post a clip for this reason, if you look at my opening comments at the strat of this thread I was full of confidence, the pro said the swing was good solid, perfect plane, straight shots etc etc..........................then I posted and I'm back at the range working on hips.

Played last night 10 holes, a little poor at the start, then found by conciously keeping my hips still on the backswing I got through better into impact.

Why don't you post you swing?

                          Ian.

                            Ian

I will try too. Im not really that technically minded and it isnt my video camera but I will ask my pal the next time were at the range to try and save it as a movie file and upload it to the gallery

Like you say I prefer to learn by feel and check myself now and again with the video. If I put myself on video all the time I think id get myself in a knot with the technicals since i'd always find something wrong!

After that session the other day when I got my sequencing a little better I was hitting the ball really well. Played 3 holes last night now the lights a bit longer and played them all in par so im of a mind not to tinker for a while and just go play whilst the going's good!

                              Hi Paul,

I agree, the problem is there will always be faults of some kind and it is the trail for the golden fleece, that you may never find.

I am happy with my swing now and don't intend to work on anything only hips and speed, because it feels better.

That said, you do have to think of some thing so I try little things on the course like 'picking a mark in front of the ball', the first six inches of takeaway, anything that is minor and doesn't affect my performance in any way.

Let hope we have a good season, anytime you find yourself up in Staffordshire let me know a free round at my course awaits.

                              Cheers

                              Ian.
