Not sure but I think you mean you are leaving the club behind and hitting to late, if this is the case then you will push alot of shots and hook the odd few as the wrists compensate.
Cure, the lateness is not a problem more the opposite an asset, what you are no doubt doing is dropping to much on the inside coming down this gets the club "stuck" behind the body, what you need to do is look at the downswing path, work on the swing plane into impact.

Too much lag causes me to back behind the ball in a effort to get reasonable height to my shots. My shaft is angle well foward at impact.

With a shaft angle well forward at impact, it sounds like you're flipping your wrists trying to get the ball up. If you don't like the height of you driver, buy one with more loft, and stop flipping your hands.
