  • Wrist Angle At Addess/Impact

I'm not asking about side-to-side angle / cupped wrists as per Greg's right-hand drill, but what angle should the wrists be at address/impact in the up-and-down cocking movement?

Up until now I have held the club with my wrists in just the natural angle they fall in, although I started to wonder whether it's hard to return to this same angle when un-cocking on the downswing. Today I experimented by addressing the ball with my wrists completely un-cocked... is this correct, or completely wrong?

This meant that at address and impact the club and my arms were pretty much in a straight line when looking down-the-line. It of course also meant that I was standing further from the ball than I would do normally.

From what I understand, this probably is the wrong thing to do, but this did make me feel more confident in my swing and seemed to help cure any slice in my swing and even caused a bit of a draw...

    Thanks!

    Jonathan

You have it right. Address though might have the angle set a little more (the arms hang straight down while the club at address is angled to the ball), while at impact, your arms and club will end up being pretty straight. The forces you are putting on the arms, hands and club will cause this naturally. There is really nothing you should be doing to force this other then making a good strong move to the ball, and they end up being in the line.

Would you advocate cupping the right wrist at setup? Would this promote an inside takeaway?

Shootin, whenever I have experimented with this in the past its always felt like its led to a forward leaning shaft with my hands too far forward since it moves the clubhead back from the ball (i.e. cupping the right wrist)

I have trouble with this as well. In order to "cup the wrist", at address, it appears that you would have to break them side ways, rather than up and down, which I thought was a no no. In looking at the pros, from down the line, it appears that the right wrist at address is sort of reversed cocked. I am not sure this makes sense, and I do not know how to explain it. Maybe a "negative or downward cocking" of the wrist at address.

That's how it feels. But it works. I got back from the simulator where I made that setup change, and was just crushing balls. My lead arm and shaft form a straight line, and I've got a quite strong grip.

This is what I was trying to get at in This Thread

I thought this "reverse cock" seemed to have to do with the right hand grip. But, perhaps is it the amount that the player is "reaching" for the ball? For example, if the arms hang vertically down, they will make a larger angle with the club shaft, so no need for the "reverse cock", but if the player reaches a bit, the "reverse cock" occurs.

So when in this setup position with say a 7i would your left hand be level with your left thigh and the right wrist cupped with some softness in the right arm/elbow?

how much cup do you have, does not have to be fully cupped. You can have a little cup in the front and rear wrists.

If you set up with the ball in the middle of your stance, and your hands in front of the ball, I do not see how you could possibly have the right wrist "cupped". Obviously, I am missing something.
