Re: short iron shank
Hi Derek,
Just so happens my father is flying in from Rosscommom today to see me, they live in sunny Ireland.
Back to business, do you find your divots point to the left of the target, if so then you are coming down on the outside with the short irons, then staying there through the ball because the rest of the swing is fine, you may find this is more to do with a little anxiety and simply rushing the shot.
What I have described is based on my own experiance, may not be for you, just a simple case of standing to close, if so then set up to the ball with the toe of the club.
Hope this helps
Ian.

Re: short iron shank
Interestingly, I was listening to the golf channel last night. As it turns out, some great drivers of the ball where not great iron players and visa versa. Reason being that a driver is with ball position more foward and you are hitting on the upswing and irons more middle and more down and through the ball. Anyway, I would check your stance as may need to adjust for shorter irons.

Re: short iron shank
Um, well ... a shank can come from a number of things, not just the 'out to in' swing everyone keeps on talking about.
The most common problem I see when people shank short irons is an impact alignment where the hands no longer lead the club. The second most common cause I see is where the player moves towards the ball during the swing.
Practice by firstly making sure the hands lead the club into impact and keep your spine angle & height constant until after impact and that should solve your problem, whatever it is.
If you need more help on this, post or e-mail me anytime.

Re: short iron shank
Thanks Ian,Msklar92,andPeter3, you guys all have the same advice for me stand further from the ball so I will try to do this this weekend as I have an important competition to play.
Hopefully I will be further from the ball before and after I hit it.
Enjoy your golf guys

Re: short iron shank
anytime i have the shanks flare up..i can almost always cure it immediately by making sure i am rotating my shoulders to the top of backswing and back thru downswing. My shanks happen when i get to armsy in my swing and not enough upper body turn.Hope this helps-David
