Best Instructional Golf Books

What are your favourite instructional golf books?

I know that "Dave Pelz's Short Game Bible" and "Ben Hogan's Five Lessons" are supposed to be two of the best but what other books out there have really helped you and what did they tell you and how did they do it.

Jack Nicklaus "Golf my way" is very good. Hogan's book is the bible, BUT, it contains some very advanced stuff, that I believe will hurt a new player. It is not a book for someone new to golf. If I had my way, I would not let anyone read Hogans book until they had a 10 hdycap. Just my opinion.

If you believe Jim Hardy, one plane vs two plane swing, read from the pro who fits your swing. Hogan is one plane and Nicholas is two plane. anyway, just mentioned it because I saw him recently on the golf channel and he happened to site those 2 players.

For the short game, Pelz has some good info. For the long game, anything by Earnest Jones, or any instructor that is now teacheing his swing the club head technique. Pinick's books are worth more than the instruction he offers. Just about any book has something to offer the individual who can read, and understand what they have read. Where books create a problem is when you start mixing one teacher's technique with another's that is different. Books will never replace what a qualified, certified club pro can teach you in person, as long as you can find a club pro that works for your ego, and not their's. GJS

I like my golf books also. At the moment i have "Golf Back To Basics" by steve bann & "The encyclopedia of golf techniques" by Chris Meadows.

I think if you're talking general golf instruction applied to the modern golf swing, you can't go wrong with any of Jim McClean's books. If you like the technical side, then David Leadbetter is your guy. Neither of them have ever published a rubbish book, EVER!

Or you could of course wait for the best ever, which is the book I'm busy with now. If I get the publishing go-ahead it'll be out in December 2007.

LOL...what a shameless plug...but I would be interested in reading it when it come out. What basics will you cover, will you divide into basic and advanced chapters, or just cover it all at once.

I couldn't help myself !!!

It's going to be in sections ... basics & fundementals, swing techniques, short game, putting, course management, quick fire tips & solutions, practice routines & games and then a closing chapter written by a good friend of mine about golf-specific excercise & 'golf day' diet.

So far it'll be about 277 pages. But, all that depends on whether the publisher likes the finished product or not.

Um, 2 planes - not really, I do have a small section on the 1 plane swing but not a great deal. I'm not expert on it ...

Graham if you find that 277 pages are not enough and maybe if you wanna add a few more pages so you can sell the book at a higher price, consider doing a small bit on equipment (head, shaft, grips, etc)!

Should be a good read. Put me down for one! Will that book be encompassing a lot of Manzellas ideas? Or will it be very much your own take on the swing?

Heres a really good book that I refer to a lot by Paul Foston

He's got some really good ideas using your body, connection, being target focused and eliminating ball boundness (is that a new phrase!) and also practice schedule (he eschews the idea of learning to swing by swinging 100's of time without a ball before you put one down)

B. rotelli - "golf is not a perfect game" - not instructional re: the swing, but mandatory reading if you play - from a psychological viewpoint.

His concept is pretty simple, maybe you should pick up his book just to see what he is talking about.
