  • Had a golf lesson the other day

I took my first of the year golf lesson the other day with the say guy I have used over the last 3 yrs. As always I have him start from scratch, looking at my grip, stance etc. My biggest problem is coming over the top and slicing the ball. He says (which I agree) my swing is to long (I can see my club head out the corner of my left eye on my bak swing). I am working on that and am making some progress. What he does is stand behind me with a club and when I swing back my club hits his club at the top of my swing which tells me to start my down swing. It seems to be working. But there was something else he did that I have questions about. He told me to take a 5I setup in my normal stance (ball and club head in the middle of my stance) but straighten my left arm. I thought thats what I was doing all along. He said no, in order for your left arm and club to be in a straight line your arm has to be moved so it is lined up with the crease of your pants on your left leg. Of course with every club it is different because of where the ball is in your stance. But you have to maintain that straight line of arm and club. I hope I am explaining this right because I tried it this passed Sunday and my shots where better. Better line and more down the middle. Have any of you gentleman done this or have I been in the dark these last 6yrs.

Any chance we can get a picture of this with some diagraming on it so I can visualize what's being said?

I have to be careful though if I don't pay attention it would seem like I am almost delofting the club, especially the driver.

The drill I use is when you are setup with your 7i, to place the driver from the forward shoulder, down the arm and make a line to the ball. Take the 7i back to just about parallel to the ground without moving anything except the shoulders rotating while I hold the driver in place. Freaks a lot out that it is that simple. Then they just rip it when I take the club off. Everything is in perfect place.

Yeah, your teaching pro is correct. You should try to align your left arm and club at setup and again at impact. It helps for 2 reasons: in your takeaway (which is why the address position is important) the club and left arm stay connected and the second advantage of doing this at address is to ensure your hands are ahead of the golf ball.

The same position at impact aligns a firm left wrist with the club that is ideal to deliver the impact blow.

Quite correct again, each club differs and the longer the club is, the less forward lean you want.

That was the best way for me mate. they changes my grip , stance and focused on my targeting. But like i said the PGA trained lessons are working well for me and i will continue to have a lession a week until told otherwise. Nice to see i can offer a small bit of help as well as being helped
