  • Cupped left hand.

    Hi everyone.
Recently videod my swing and amongst may other problems i discovered I noticed that at the top of the backswing ( which incidentally was well across the line at the top) the left hand was badly cupped. I am aware that it is supposed to be slightly cupped but mine was extreme. i suspect it relates to the grip but not sure.
    2 questions
    1. How do i stop this extreme cupping
    2. I notice many pga pros have a flat left hand at the top. How do they achieve this as it seems to be fairly standard of pros.
    regards

      Re: Cupped left hand.

I'd start with your grip and hand position as a joint excercise ... you need agrip that allows that allows enough strength to keep hold & control over the golf club and make sure it's held less in the palm and more in the fingers ... the hand position has to be level or forward ofthe ball (except maybe with a driver).

A good grip and hand position will create a s-l-i-g-h-t cupping of the left & right wrist ... if you have a lot of cupping in the left wrist, you're starting off in a bad position.

It's virtually impossible to have a lot of cupping if you're hands are correctly positioned. Now take the hands back, turning the shoulders and hips and you should end up in a powerful position with very little cupping of the left wrist. If you do, you've rotated your wrists incorrectly.

I'll gladly give you more advice if you need it, but let's not go there for now. Check the grip & hand position first, take it to the top and check again. If you're still cupping, then we need to work on your wrist hinge.

Welcome to the club Jim I've also been struggling with a cupped left wrist at the top... Here are some of my previous posts which all have some mention of the left wrist...

          Re: Cupped left hand.

Thanks for the replys guys. Information greatly appreciated. I guess it didnt seem to bother Bobby Jones.
Anyway, Graham, I tried your suggestion re hands slightly forward, which to me seems a mile when in setup position but on video hands were only slightly in front. Guess what no major cupping only slightly. I guess its the old story. What you think is seems like a huge change is generally only minimal. ie what I thought was hands forward of ball on video turned out to be level with or just behind.
Simon followed your links provided and appreciate information. If you have read Graham Arnotts response to my thread and you have similar problem now, just do as he has suggested, it seems to have worked for me.
          Regards

Glad we solved your problem ... but what you experienced is almost always the case. A slight change seems like a major change until you see the results.

Glad I could help, it's what makes being a professional golfer so rewarding.

              Re: Cupped left hand.

at the top of the back swing make sure your RIGHT wrist is cupped, this should help to flatten your left wrist

                Re: Cupped left hand.

Good to hear it was that easy for you Jim I know what's my bad habit - when I reach the top, I try to hinge my right wrist and by overdoing that, I end up cupping the left wrist. And to my horror (by doing some testing just now), I found out that if I really overdo the hinging of the right wrist, the cupping actually disappears! Well bad news is that it's now ingrained in my swing as a result of doing the same thing for 10 months, and it's really difficult for me to kick that habit now...Plenty of drills and practice swings for me now I guess :P

Good thing is I realise that even though my left wrist is cupped at the top, when I swing down I will uncup the left wrist and end up with a nice flat left wrist and cupped right wrist at impact.

So I'm curious to know, what hosts of problems would a cupped left wrist at the top bring, if at impact it goes back to flat? Is it the swing plane? Power loss? Etc?

                Thanks!

not sure what your concept of hinge is. rear/right wrist does not COCK, it cups. left wrist cocks. In the back swing, the right wrist cups, the right elbow folds and the left wrist cocks. as far as being cupped at the top, it can create timing issues, especially on short shots. Also, if you happen to be a little tense over a shot you may not have your arms relaxed enough to make that move.

                    Re: Cupped left hand.

Got it. Somehow I got the wrong impression right from the start from looking at Greg's right hand drill video that the right wrist is supposed to cock :P I think the problem is I have extremely flexible wrists and joints, and everything ends up being overdone :P

I'm trying very hard to correct that now, thanks!
