  • Riddle me this...

I have been going to the range in order to tune up for a 3 day outing in Charleston, SC. After reading a couple of articles, I have been trying to focus on a couple of things. One, trying to keep the right wrist hinged at address (a la the Right Hand Drill) and two, trying to maintain a straight left arm at the top of my swing. This has resulted in a little bigger shoulder turn as my mental image is to pull the left arm with the right.

Now for the riddle. It seems that now I don't slice the ball. Although I hit a few of the longest drives (and straight) that I have hit, I now hook (not a pull hook) my drives and pull my irons to the left (starts left, stays left). I did experiment with my club at address. With my hands ahead of the ball and the shaft leaning forward at address, I oh so slightly opened the face of the club. I was using a 7 iron. I proceeded to hit several shots dead on.

Now for the question. Is the club supposed to be slightly open at address? Or did I just happen to get lucky on those shots and am now destined to go from playing the right side of the course to playing the left side of the course? Might not be so bad, haven't seen much of the left side of the course.

Thanks for your thoughts. By the way, I am a 20 handicapper and vow to lower that this season.

    Re: Riddle me this...

If you are in a change, your old swing will still be there wether you want it or not. It takes lots of swings to fully change. You are probably still having a little swat in the hands trying to close them down. Opening the face for now seems to have solved the problem. What you will want to get working on next is to start to feel a more inside approach to the ball, and not square on. Think about hitting the ball at the 4 o'clock position (8 for lefties). This will allow you the square setup and have it stay straight and long like to are getting to now.
