At the top of the backswing, is the your left arm meant to point to the target? My arm points along way right of the target.

The arms & club need to point NOT AT the target but at a point parallel left of the target. You stand to the left (if you're right handed) of the target, so you have to swing inside or the left of the target.
Here's a pic to help you. The circle to the right is the target at the end of the range. The club is pointing at a target to the left of target but parallel to the target line.
