  • Skying Irons

I am 16 and currently playing to a 22 handicap and playing regulaly every weekend and my line and consistancy of my shots is not a problem. I am reletivly tall (6ft 2) and i hit my 7 iron around 150 and driver about 230 to give you an idea of my swing speed.

Recently however my shots have seemed to fly incredibaly high losing me distance and as a play at a lynx course regulaly the high winds just seem to take my ball whereever they want. I had the same problem with my driver recently yet having a small tee and putting the ball further forward in my stance has solved this.

Any help would be much appreciated

To hit the ball lower, but the ball further back in your stance. That generally helps but might take some practice because you'll need to get your timing right.

You might, this is an educated guess, be scooping at it and the club passes your hands too early in the downswing and into impact. If this is your problem, focus on getting the hands to beat the club to the ball on the downswing.

Those are the easy solutions. If neither of them help, let us know and I'm sure we can suggest a few more things.

Sorry - one more thing. If you play with cavity backs with a heavy sole, like oversized irons with a big fat sole the size of a spade, that won't help you to keep the ball down.

That could also be contributing factor.

I hit my Irons relatively high also, I do not hit the ball very far, and need to increase my strength. I usually play the ball foward in my stance so I will try to put it farther back in my stance as well. Thanks for the tip.

played today and practiced down the range. no problem with putting the ball in the back of my stance yet still the ball had a higher trajectory than i would like. I also tried to push my wrist forward to get passed the ball before the club yet this did not help either. any other tips? could it be to do with my swing plane?

              Re: Skying Irons

If you shoot right-handed, extend your right index finger so that it still hooks around the grip but enough so that when you swing you can feel pressure on its side.

If you make sure you always feel pressure on that finger it means that your not decelerating through impact. When you decelerate, you let the club-head go faster than your hands and so the club head "passes" the hands (relatively speaking).

The idea is to always feel pressure on the side of your "trigger" finger through the downswing and through impact.

hi everyone. thanks for the ideas however i have tried all of these and have been playing golf several times this week and i am still doing the same thing! i have also noticed that i have lost tremendous distance and now all off my irons are starting to go similar lenght!? eg i used to hit my 7 iron 150 and now i hit it 100 yards including my 6 and 8 and five iron!
could this be due to early release of wrists on the downswing?

                any help?

                  Re: Skying Irons

when all your clubs start to go the same distance its a sure sign you are scouping.

                      Re: Skying Irons

Geez - it sounds like we've gone from bad to worse ...

If you are hitting all your clubs the same distance, something is seriously wrong!!! No matter how bad you hit the ball, the clubs should go different distances.

Okay, do me a favour ... take some masking tape to the range with you next time. Put the tape on the face and take note of where the impacts are on the face. I need to see where the impacts are to give a sense of what the ball striking quality is like.

Are you on a mat hitting area of grass hitting area? I'd like to know if you are hitting the ball at the bottom point of your swing or before or after ... that has a LOT to do with the ball flight.

I'm sorry it's gone complicated but if the simple solutions aren't working, then we need to look deeper into what is going on.

                        Re: Skying Irons

Yeah i know. lol. It seems strange as i have never had this problem before and i havnt really changed much in my swing recently except sorting the plane of my club. The distance issue may just be due to there being wind being into my face. Im was hitting the ball off of a normal range mat. i think i am hitting the ball at the bottom of my swing. i have a lesson tomorrow as this issue was really starting to bug me so i will try and see the outcome and inform you

ive had a couple of lessons and have found out that i was scooping
does anyone know any ways how to stop this.
One other problem i had was i was i was slightly overswinging which basically destroyed my swing and i was coming down on the ball too hard. but thankfully i easily stopped this

                            Re: Skying Irons

you may be on to something with the spine angle. try more spine tilt and keep it there throughout the swing. try it first with short pitches. I think you will find the hands need to lead the swing otherwise you will be hitting fat.

get a greg normans secret or a swing glove, it will keep you from scooping

or....just go cheap and tape a stick on to your left arm and wrist to keep it from cupping
