  • Fairway Wood Swing

My swing with the driver, long irons and short irons are fine. In fact they are build along the same idea, balance of power between left and right hands. I have worked very hard to develope a moderate swing with no unusual features. My strengths are I hit the ball straight and sufficient distance.

However, I just cannot use the same swing for my fairway woods (3 wood) - I talking about hitting the FW off the fairway, no problems off the tee. For my FW, I find the only way I can hit it solidly and long is to use primarily my right hands to "spank" the ball. This is the only way I can get very good result. My usually consistent method for other clubs just doesn't work for the FW. My FW swing also doesn't translate to consistency to other clubs.

The FW swing is a little lower than the teed up swing. You have to make the compensation for the lower distance. Move a little closer to the ball, about half and inch to an inch. Also play the ball back in your stance about half an inch to an inch. You will make much better contact.
The punch shot you described is a good sure thing shot. If you feel your confidence is there yet with a full shot or need to play under the wind it is a good alternative. I know people who would kill to have that shot in their bag.
