  • overswing(left arm bend),swatting & sliding hips

    Hi,
Went for video lesson and confirmed my problems.
    1) Overwing... arms continue to move and bend after shoulders have reached full turn
    2) On downswing I slide my hips and dont actually turn until after strike (shoulders almost closed at hit)
    3) My wrists are "swatting" at the ball, sometimes from a very inside, cramped position.
    My Strikes
    1) Weak, scooping irons (all are "lob" flight)
    2) Very eratic ball direction from club (except at driving range.....strange)
I tried Greg Normans secret but not sure if I should concentrate on turn or overswing first !!!!
    Any advise....help.

Fix the hands flipping and turning through impact first. Overswing is minor in comparison.

What drills did your lesson instructor give you?

No suggested drills...just told to "turn" and clear left hip and try to let left hand dominate !

Demand your money back...or, go to him and ask him to give you drills to work on for the next lesson. Do not let him charge you a dime for the suggestions. Unless you do not feel comfortable doing that...just my opinion.

Okay, obviously I was given a raw deal, but you (anybody) got any drills that are suitable ?

            Hi

This sounds just like me. I also went for a lesson and was advised to reduce the speed of my backswing, this is causing my hips to slide and arm to overswing as a result I have little or no chance of getting my hands back so they will swat the ball. If you slow down / shorten the backswing then things start to fall in place. For a drill I just imagine that I am taking a half swing back and I use my video camera to check.

It is really sad to me. There seems to be a LOT of bad instructors out there. There is a HUGE difference between good players and good instructors. For the video session I would get a copy of the tape and take it to another pro to analyze that you have heard good things about.

Hi snakehips I also have a huge problem with overswinging (overactive hands to be exact). What happens is that at the top of my swing, I end up with at least 3 ugly frames of hands/wrist movements thinking that it will provide more power. I've been working on some swing thoughts lately, they seem to help but we'll let the more experienced players here decide that for you :P

I work on 3 checkpoint on my backswing now :

                1) Takeaway position - make sure shaft is pointing back along target line with toe pointing up (this is pretty standard).
                2) Cup right wrist.
                3) Turn shoulders, make sure hands don't do anything anymore. (I'm still trying to determine how much I should raise my arms though, any thoughts on this?)

Once you've done this like a few hundred times, you can start to try piecing them together into one fluid movement. This seems to put me at a much better position at the top.

On turning:A lot of people start the downswing with the hands and arms - it might not feel like that to the golfer and it's hard to detect. Get a weighted training club, or if your short of cash, swing with a broom. The head resting on the ground. If you swing with your hands using each device you will soon know about it because you'll be exhausted. It really helps you to turn rather than sliding the hips or hitting from the top.
