  • RHD??? No Power

Ok, I have been struggling recently and I know this is not the cure-all to everyone's problems. I tried using the right hand drill on the range today and everything just seemed really weak. Everyone of my shots were push-fades with no POP on the ball. Maybe I am just not understanding things correctly. I feel like I am not releasing through the ball at all and it up in the chicken wing position at the end of my follow-through. Is there something I just am not getting.

Remember, the drill is not meant to have a lot of power behind it. Simple 1/2 shots, shoulders turn back, isolating the hands' movement in an up/dn motion and a hip rotation through.

Your results should be straight if you get your hips around before impact (my first guess at the pushes)

Then, take this swing to a full postion at the top and see what the results are.

You are allowed to release strong to the ball as long as the hands are up/dn only and not side-to-side.

I think I am just going to have to video tape to see what is really going on. I did a search last night, and you have helped a lot people. Whenever I did just the drill I understand what you are getting at. But my full swing version, I just felt like I wasn't releasing through the shot at all and seemed contrary to a lot of things I have been taught.

By the way, I like your thought on putting. Helps solves peoples tendancy of deacceleration on putting which I have no problems saying is the Killer of 90 percent of bad putting strokes out there. Every since I played a round with a pro and really saw how little he really took back his putts, I have personally putted so much better.

        Greg,

If I am using the rhd technique, how do I release the club through impact. I just can't seem to figure it out. I feel like I am taking all the whip out of the swing. I know you don't want to be "handsy" but I can't feel like I am releasing the club with this method. Sorry for the confusion.

Just setup normal with the right hand cupped back. Imagine a bug is crawling under your club. Pick the club UP with just your wrists to their maximum hight..you can probably get to about a 90 degree or more angle.

Now KILL that bug! This is the correct action for the wrists. And you can be as agressive as you want (knowing that the harder you release the club DOWN the higher the ball will go).

          Does that help?

During the normal swing, because you are rotating your hips and shoulders as you do this "dance of the bug-splat", you will be causing the club to hit the ground with your wrists and the squaring of the club is done with the full rotation of the hips and shoulders.

Ok, now this is starting to make more since. I think I was locking my hands altogether. Not even allowing the up and down motion. I was going to play a round tomorrow, but I think I will just go to the range instead. I will let you know how I do.

I also need to find a Secret.

Ok, good. I know it is not the easiest to read words and translate it all to action and understanding. What makes this forum so great that you can get immediate feedback...

Thanks for the support Greg. I am not going to give up on this as I know this is what I need to be doing. I also just bought a Secret on ebay tonight so that should be here in a week.

I don't know why, but that made me laugh. My guess is I have been casting/flipping this whole time but I have relied on my superior hand/eye cordination. We got huge storms here in Austin last night so I am not sure if I will be able to hit the range or not. I also have a lot of projects coming due, I am in my last semester of getting a Masters in Accounting from U of Texas.
