  • OK, I guess I have multi problems...

At the range today, working on the RHD. I am not hitting well again and the guy next to me is obviously a very good player. I ask him to just peek at my swing. He states that my right leg is almost dead straight and to get a little knee bend.

    1) Will this str8 leg cause me to reverse pivot?
    2) After working on leg flex, I noticed that if I focused getting more weight to my right side on the backswing and stay "behind" the ball more that my driver shots IMMEDIATELY became better.
    3) Are these two things a function of themselves.
    4) How much should I focus on getting behind the ball or should I feel I am turning around my body.
    5) I have a feeling I might have been swing wrong all my life but just never noticed because I played so often I got my timing down, but now coming back to the game after three years off the timing isn't there so my bad swing mechanics are really kicking in.

    Wow, that was long winded.

    Hey up Horns,

The guy at the range is correct, a straight right leg will cause all sorts of problems, reverse pivot being one of them, also an over the top swing hence slice.................

If you take your NEW address position with both knees flexed, now take your club and put it straight across your shoulders holding it with both hands so that the butt is aiming at your intended target.......................now turn your shoulders back until the club is over your right foot. Turn back through until the club is over the left foot.

    Hope this makes sense.

    Ian.

This absolutely makes sense. I am pretty sure this is the cause of my problems. I figure I work on this for a week till the Secret gets here. Thanks for support Ian. You kind of just reaffirmed the feeling I thought I needed to do.

Turn around your right leg as a base for driver and turn around your left leg as a base for irons; when you do this, it should remove a lot of problems. All this assumes good posture, not swaying on backswing, and a good shoulder turn.
I like to also check to make sure I am staying with the shot, committing to hitting through impact, and removing tension at the top.

          Mr. A_Hornsfan,

Have you ever been video taped? As I've stated before, to make myself feel better about my ****py swing, I video tape my friends. What they think is wrong ("I know I have an overswing issue") and what is wrong ("complete collapse of left side at impact") are two very different things.

Since I am a video tape junky, I have watched way too many hours of myself on film. In a round with some friends, a very good golfer said, "you picked your head up."

Now I have painful watched my swing for a year, and near, ever ONCE have I pulled up my head. He was simply wrong.

However, since the swing is so blazing fast, most people can't see the real issues that happen in the impact zone. Therefore, they concentrate on those that they can see.

This person may be absolutely correct, OR he could send you down a road that will have you practicing on something that isn't a big issue.

          My current thought process:

          1. Find out all the mistakes
          2. Prioritize the issues
          3. Work on one issue until it is really fixed
          4. Then move on

I do believe that there are gift coaches who brains are wired to be able to see and pull apart actions that are 2/10 of a second long. However, the vast majority of us need technology to spot the mistakes. After video taping my friends, I can see errors that are a crime. Their current coaches have them working on things like "you're opening your club face at the top of the swing."

My pattern comes from piano playing. Once you ever nail a section of music, it is hard to "unnail it." However, what you should not do is try and play the whole piece at once. Work on the problem section.

            Funny you say that.....

I just videotaped myself yesterday and found a couple of big time faults that I can work on. I posted them on the new thread. I welcome your comments.
