Allthough I dont really have a problem with my wedge to 6, I can not fathom out why the 5 iron down to 3, doesnt give me the same consistency. I allow for the usual basics in set up with these irons i.e. ball position forward, wider stance, but no go. How important is a wider arc with these clubs, or is there any importance? I have run out of ideas.

Most players have a magic number that they start to change their swing. For you it is the 5i. Assuming your clubs all spec out the same where you really don't have difference in them then length, you hit the ball differently. You don't realize it, but you do. It is usualy a distance you hit the club just under that magic one (your 6i), it may be 160 yds. Anything after that you try something different to make the ball go farther rather then letting the same swing with a different club do the trick.

Try this at the range next time. Take a piece of impact tape or simple masking tape and put it over your 6i and 5i. Hit each 1 shot only, changing back and forth without thinking about what club you have. Just thinking the same swing for both. Do this for the whole bucket, or until you break this number barrier in your head.

Then do this next time with the 5i and 4i...etc until you trick this stuff out of your head.

Thanks gregg, I seem to think that the take away with the five or four etc must be different to 8 or 9 etc.Does it follow that due to a longer shaft on the 5 etc, then the arc must be wider?

I use Adams Idea 4 and 5 i-Woods that I love and almost always hit right. If I start making poor contact with, say, my 7 iron, I think about how I swing my 5 i-Wood and then make the same swing with my 7 iron. Then I swing the 7i right.

I realize it's reverse to your situation with the longer irons, but I think the analogy works. Think about the swing of the clubs you swing well. Use that swing for the more ornery clubs.

a lot of people tend to swing harder because the need the club to go farther, think to yourself to swing easier

yeah, swinging harder isnt the key, thats the thing about tempo, im seriously thinking about getting a tempo gadget
