  • wrist cup, cock, release, cross over

I love the idea of wrist cup - keeping a straight line in your left wrist. Learned it from Greg's site. I can find my target line easy with it.

I am having problems with my right hand. I am not confident with the release and cross over. I might hit flat or thin shots. More I cock my wrist - more I need accuracy with my right hand to hit the ball.

Any ideas how to practice release and crossover - other than shooting a lot:-)

Try the feet together drill for fat and thin shots. Aim you toes 45 degrees towards the target. Take a big shoulder turn back and set the hands. Let your hips start the down swing. Release as strong as you want at the ball. The more you release down, the higher the ball will go. So play with this element. After a good set of solid shots, begin to move your feet back to a normal position. And feel the same impact points where you were in the drills.

      Hi Hannu,

This may not be what you are looking for but here goes:

Forget about the release, if you have everything in the right place the release should happen naturally, without manipulation.

Try the face on video of your swing you may be suprised that you already release fine, it's actually harder to hold off the shot.

      Hope this helps

      Ian.

all the release is, is a rotation of the left forearm. take left arm without a club, hold it straight out in front of you at chest heigth. now rotate it back and forth, that is the release in the golf swing

          In the golf machine, yes.

and the other way would be right arm extension? It would have been more accurate for me to say the release is left forearm rotation with right arm extension. And depending on your swing type the right arm extension may happen by pushing or be allowed to happen by centrifugal force. If you are thinking of another type, I would be interested to hear it

The other is a "Release" of the hands having been set in the "up" position going back "down".

The release is the wrist uncocking into impact... it refers to the angle between the club shaft and the plane of the arms as they move around the axis of the rotating body.

descriptions can be hard to give on paper as well as you know them in your head, I agree with your description about uncocking, as I also agree with your body release. Depending on how much you open and close the club face in the golf swing. some peopel will only have an uncock, with body movement, while others will have an uncock and roll of the left forearm with body movement

Sorry, I didn't follow you there on the last part.

some players have more club face rotation throughout their swing, and also more forearm rotation throughout there swing. IF you fan it open on the way back, you need to rotate the forearm to let it square

Agreed. But what does this have to do with the "Release"? The Cocking and uncocking of the wrist hinge is what I am considering the release. The rotation of the forarms to me, are not a releasing type action where you get to generate power "from"...it is essentital to the squaring of the face yes, and the method I like to use to get the arms rotating is rotating the hips and shoulders past setup. This way you don't even, think about it. Relax that part and it is done for you.

I am only trying to be as clear as I can in my thinking so we might understand each others methods. I love this discussion! I hope its not taken as anything other then that.

Well it sure as hell is confusing for a poor guy trying to iron out his swing! :P

it is a good discussion, hopefully some people will get something out of it

now why is this considered release? well if someone hit a push what would an instructor say, "you did not release through the shot" it is not that the angle between club shaft and arm did not release, because if that was the case then they would have topped or thinned the shot. It is because they did not have enough forearm rotation, assuming that their body rotation was good.

                              think of this
let me stand in front of you while holding my club in my hand with the head of my club at your kneecap, now from there I will rotate my forearm only so the club moves away from your kneecap, then I will rotate it back to your kneecap as hard as I can, no body movement, no cocking, just forearm rotation, will you be standing there when the club head is about to strike?
