I am a 6 handicap but a pro told me my right arm (I am righthanded) should be more upright in a "L" position on my backswing. I tried this but it throws my swing off and I hit poor shots. How critical is the "L"?

The L of the right arm might net you a little more distance. It's probably a matter of practicing it. Is it crutial, not really. If you look at some senior swings like Allen Doyle, he doen't even get it close but has a solid swing through impact. Being a 6 Hcp it probably is a matter of comfort. If you are still tweaking your swing you might want to try it.
