  • Hitting Thin!!

Hi guys...I am new here but I am so perplexed at hitting thin low shots....I can't stop it. I am a five to ten handicap at the moment and draw the ball....the other part of the problem is that all shots are not thin ...but the swing feels the same.....I do this variety with all clubs.....any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Hi Big Guy,

I remember watching Jim Mclean on the golf channel some time ago adressing this very issue. His point was that if we dont keep the knees bent in the same position from takeaway to strike, the n the height of the club face changes behind the ball. Result: fat and thin shots. Hope this helps

    Regards,
    Robert

a 5-10 handicap, that is a pretty big gap there

not really a big gap if you have a new flaw, a few thin shots can add 5 strokes to your card easy...

As Robert said, its changing your setup "height" that causes these shots.
If you dip you get it fat, if (like me) you stand up you hit them thin.
Its very frustrating because you are 90% towards a perfect shot but you thin it, usually dead straight!
So, moral of the story is make sure you stay down & behind the ball through impact.

I know....I have not been playing much in the last few years and some swing problems have been creeping in.....I've just recently got back to hitting it more consistently but often thin.....very frustrating...but I think the knee suggestion might help.

Yes. level and little movement from the waist down

I would really focus on the knee flex. When my shot "thickness" starts coming into play, it is usually due to the right knee.

                  Re: Hitting Thin!!

Thin shots are the bane of my existence. When I've hit it thin I almost invariably have too much tension in my hands, either at address or at impact. When I keep them loose I almost never hit thin (all things being equal).

                    Re: Hitting Thin!!

Hitting thin can come from trying to lift the ball. When you try to lift the clubhead passes the hands, there is a breakdown in the left wrist and the blade of the club comes up hitting the equator of the ball. The left wrist needs to stay flat, the hands and arms need to lead the clubhead. BTW, hitting thing is more common this time of year because the fairways are thin making it more difficult to hit down and through the ball.

Weight transfer is probably off. Weight distribution at address:
Irons: 70% left foot and 30% right foot, then, slow takeaway
Woods: 30% left foot and 70% right foot, also slow takeaway.
Slow it down and allow everything to work together

                        Hi big guy,

I think you need to check the ball position,

also try to keep your head down.

                        Liam,

Hitting thin and chunking are actually the same fault. I would say that you are probably reverse pivoting . try to get a feeling for your weight shifting onto the inside of your right foot through the backswing and then make sure your weight transfers onto your left foot as you follow through. weight at impact should be pretty evenly sread between both feet , but inclining towards you left foot
                          Regards . Terry

Thanks for all of the advice guys....it was very helpful....although the hitting thin problem is a combination of faults the best advice that really helped was the very first bit ....try to keep your knees level.......that simple bit changed a lot of thin hits into solid on the face hits.....it feels great to hit some flush shots again.....hitting thin in this cold weather has not been fun .....only around 10 c this weekend with the chill around the freezing point. Good luck guys and thanks again!!!!!

When I hit em thin I stand on my head for an hour and spit into the wind. This results in much greater concentration and thereby better contact with the ball because I do not want to suffer that punishment again..

                              Just kidding guy's, just kidding,,
