Would it be a good idea to buy one of those practice nets that you can set up in your backyard and also buy an artificial turf mat? I realize that you cant see the ball flight which is important, but would it be a good way to work on a swing?

I have mine. Big net, griving range quality mat. Shag of balls ready at the waiting for me, video camara setup. What you need to think about is technique and tempo. Analyzing ball flight is only a feel now, and you have to have a lot of real play and range time to know what you are doing and the feedback that you know what just happened... But, I love it. Gets me swinging right away and don't have to plan a trip. My total invenstment was about $230. Paid for it's self in 1/2 a season. -

A backyard net has been my best investment. You can really work on swing mechanics without the distractions, cost and inconvenience of going to a range. As a hacker, I only get to play a couple of rounds a month and make a couple of trips to the range per month. With a backyard net I can hit balls almost every day. It has really improved my ball striking and feel for hitting solid shots.
I ingrained much of Greg's impact descriptions/right hand drill using my backyard net rather than at the range. I definitely recommend it.Comment

It's a no brainer. Get a good quality mat & net becaue if not, both will wear out quickly from use and weather.
When using a driver, just like at the range, be carefull and resist the urge to kill the ball. I believe trying to go for that extra-fifteen yards with your most muscle bound swing, whether to an open range field or open net, is the most common deystroyer of the 15 handicap golf swing.Comment
