    Backswing / Takeaway

    Hi sam,

The recommended legth of a full backswing is for the clubshaft to be parallel to the ground at the top of the backswing. However there are players who prefer to swing a little shorter than that (a three quarter length swing), which enables greater control over the club and generally results in a more accurate shot.

I have laid out a lesson on the takeaway of the backswing here, and the completion of the backswing here.

You may be asking yourself, well what about the John Daly's and Fred Couples of this World who have a backswing that is longer than suggested. There are exceptions to any theories on the golf swing, and these individuals have crafted there swings over many years and have tremendous strength and balance to move the golf club in such a way. However a consistant, repeatable swing is far easier to achieve by following the basics and building upon them.

Good Luck & let me know how you get on
