  • Increase Knee Flex during backswing?

Here's a quick question for better players. How much additional knee flex should you employ during the backswing? I was playing yesterday with 2 of the best players at my club. One is short (5'7) and stood erect with little knee flex (think Woosie). The other was about 6'2 and had quite considerable knee flex (think Ernie or Tiger)

As they swung back both actually increased their knee flex as they got to the top. This kept the spine angle and lowered the head. Both hit the ball a mile

All I can find on this is an illustration from Golf Digest

I know this is one of Tigers signature moves and gives him that look of a squat as he starts down before his legs straighten and he kind of drives up?

I've always tried to keep a level knee flex throughout the swing but after yesterday am wondering if this is a real power move to experiment with? TOne of the guys told me afterwards he was taught this move by a senior PGA pro to increase his leverage with the ground and therefore incerase his coil and rotational speed

hey pnearn, has alittle lesson this weekend, the pro looked at my swing and said one thing, everything looks great except one thing, you are toooo athletic! i am 6'2", her thought was I was having tooo much knee flex which was causing me not being on plane on my backswing with my irons, i mentioned to her that i thought you sound be in a shortstop postion at address, instead, i was almost bending like a catcher. her tip was...address the ball as normal and feel like someone is giving you a wegggie from behind, which will bring your rear end up more and straighten out your knees alittle. WOW! I have never hit so many crisp irons like that before, a few shanks though, she mentioned that it may take alittle to get used to, what a great tip though!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

pnearn - funnily enough i have been playing great golf for the last month doing exactly this. I got the idea after reading the seven laws of the golf swing by nick Bradley - in that is a great picture of a bloke winding up in his back swing like a spring. I have noticed a heck of a lot crisper irons - occasionally i have hit some fat and i too have had a couple of shanks. I guess you shouldn't overdo anything too much! However this is going to be my basic swing thought for the summer and i am really looking forward to some good scores (striking is there but scoring hasn't yet clicked!)

The amount of knee flex will vary from person to person, its all down to personal comfort...However, what is important is that the amount of knee flex should remain constant throughout the swing, this coupled with a constant spine angle governs your height throughout the swing.

        regards .....Terry
