  • Swing Change advice needed

I have an extreme inside out swing path that causes pushes and hooks. Most of my divots point well right of the target and way to many shots of mine are hit off the heel of the club.

I have tried just about everything to take the club away on a straighter plane and am at my wits end at this point. It seems that even if I take the club away on plane, I loop the club back to the inside on the downswing, or drop my hands too much.

I am thinking about going to get a lesson or two ( I have never had a formal lesson in my life), or getting some kind of device that will aid me in swinging down the correct line.

Does anyone have a plan of action here.

    Signed,

A very frustrated 6 handicap looking for a cure!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hi jb
I think i have a drill that can help you...

When you go to the practice tee or driving range. Take you normal settup and then just turn your left foot inwards an inch or two....You may feel slightly pidgeon toed but this will quieten you hips by preventing over use.

    Highest regards....Terry

You can also try a Swing plane device, there not that much on ebay and have specific exercises for this problem

Well I saw that Inside Approach on ebay was $40 , but there is a knockoff that is $17. I have just never been a huge fan of devices like that.

The inside approach is to correct an outside insideswing. you seem to have the opposite problem. So you would set up the swing plane and swing on the outside of the plane.

Those swingplane mats are decent. I just put tees in the groud of the path I want my club to take. Make a couple nice slow swings following the path of the tees, then hit one at full speed. Couple slow swings, then hit.

It works. It has helped me get to the inside BUT not too far inside.

According to the Inside Approach website, you can turn the thing around for the extreme inside out swing, and it makes you swing over it I guess.

The solution to your problem might be in the setup.

Try to setup with the feeling that your right upper arm is on top of (instead of to the side of) your chest muscle.

Keep this connected sensation up to at least halfway into your backswing.
The first move on the downswing is to come back to being connected again.

(Some golfers like Jeff Maggert never allow themselves to lose this chest to upper part of the right upper arm connection.)

This will also ensure that your hands stay in front of your right shoulder during the swing. I think that this also promotes a better shoulder turn.

oh ok i didn't know that, inside approach is a lot easier to carry than the swing plane.

Man...I wish I came TOO FAR from the inside. I can't get inside enough!

Lets look at your problem like we look at a slice....

When you slice, its an outside-in path. So what do you do to fix it? Create seperation between your shoulders and hips and LEAD the downswing with the hips....

So maybe, JUST MAYBE, you are creating TOO much seperation. Have you tried making a shorter backswing? Are you so flexable that when you turn your hips your shoulder stay WAY back?

when I try to fade the ball I just focusing on swinging along my feet line - Tiger does this as well. When I want to draw (more like attempt) I just swing away from my feet line.

I don't know if this'll help anyone - but maybe you could combine it with something.

                        Random,

I have read that if I clear my hips to fast the club gets trapped behind me = inside out path. I have also heard if I don't clear my hips enough, I could make contact with the heel (which I do) as the club is pushed away from my body. So I don't know what the heck to do at this point. Here is an old video of my swing from face on. (I know the video shows too much lateral movement, but that has been corrected since). Do you think my hips clear too fast?? Not enough???

                          Re: Swing Change advice needed

The feet can be a great "guide" for your swingpath. When I hit a draw, I usually drop my right foot back so that my toes are at the halfway point of my left foot. This gives a visual for my swingplan. I make sure not only to come from the inside, but then to continue the swing OUT away from my body. A true inside-out swingpath.

However, just because your feet are lined up like this does NOT mean you will hit a draw....

So with your feet set like above, and your clubhead aimed at the target, make sure you adjust your shoulders and hips to the line created by your feet. Everything should be CLOSED to the target line. This is a common mistake people make. They set their feet correctly, but nothing else. I even see people set their feet closed and shoulders OPEN! Your hip and shoulder allignment is much more importat than your feet (see June 2006 Golf Illustrated "Cure for your OVER THE TOP swing").

The swingpath will get the ball going right, and the clubhead position will put spin on the ball to bring it back left. Thats how you hit a draw.

Its all basically vise versa for a fade.....pull left foot back, OPEN shoulders and hips to the same line, swing inside-square.
