  • Try this "body swing" if you are spraying it all over

    Worth a try, go to

    http://www.golfdigest.com/instructio...davenport.html

I tried it on the back 9 this morning and hit 5 of 9 greens in regulation (I average about 4 per 18 usually) I need to practice the shorter irons on the range though, they went left for some reason?

I was having a terrible problem with my hands during my swing, I start cocking my wrists everything goes to hell…. So I shopped around my area for an instructor and found who was considered the best in the area. He worked with my swing for a while and eventually got me into this exact swing. I hit the ball long and straight. My tempo is better and not thinking about my wrist helps keep me focused on rotating around my spine angle. I was pleased to see that article on this type of swing… as it works well for me. When I asked him about the lack of wrist cock he reminded me of the object of the game… “scores.” A good comfortable, repeatable swing that produces straight shots is how to score better. Good luck with it ,
I am a strong proponent and would recommend it for anyone looking for consistency.

I just reread that article and thought of a couple of other things....

keep the ball forward in your stance. I hit driver through pw with ball in exactly the same place in my stance. inside froward foot. try to hit balls to the left of target and right of target then at target. you can really steer your ball with this swing, takes some practice but you get good control of the ball flight. take it back only as far as your body turns lock those arms in place and if you just turn through... not hard ,just easy , you relay have no choice but to hit the ball clean and straight. the amount of power you get is kind of cool. It's almost like not nearly enough to send it that far. must be all that weight turning through. lol

Yeah, I couldn't believe how far and straight I was hitting my 3-wood off the fairway, but then I had this straightforward 120 yard shot and it went miles left, I thought maybe too far forward in my stance?
My driver goes too high as well, but anything that can take the inconsistency of hand movements out of the swing gas got to be good and I shall stick with it.

I had the same problem... the fix that i was given was a three fold drill and i have posted this before, but here it is again as I can't rember where.

          keeping ball on forward toe.
start with feet together , hit 4-5 balls.
take rear foot back and on toe. (one foot) so all weight on front foot hit 4-5 balls
put the rear foot on ground but still back of front foot 60% weight on front foot hit 4-5 balls. repeat

these are the only drills I was told to do every time I go golfing , range or course. It realy helps get the body swinging through. try these and your "hook" will disapear.

and never move that ball from the front of your stance, that was very impt. to my inst.

for what it's worth I paid 70$ hr for that advice and drills.. best mony I have spent on golf to date.

I have known for some time that my grip is way to weak, but I have a hell of a time with a strong grip. Is the club held more in the fingers than a neutral grip? I cannot seem to "turn" my left hand enough to the right. Does the left forearm (at address) also have to rotate to the right (the left forearm would be more to the sky) along with the hand to get a proper grip? I know this may sound stupid--------------but!

Yea the grip is hard to get use too. yes in the fingers. i had to change to a baseball grip to get it rite. but it's starting to feel "normal". make sure you can see 3 nuckles on left hand. trust it.

this looks interesting - I've always had better contact with a baseball type grip - but it felt too weird and felt like I was being robbed of some power.

But, my question is - for you guys that have made the switch to this body swing, do you use it only at specific times? Like off the tee, fairway, rough. I would imagine doing the body swing in the bunker or as a pitch, chip would be a bit difficult right?

Isn't every sound swing a "body swing"? You don't really hear very many people advocate an arms swing and I mean, I don't see anything much different here than any other swing advice I've heard, besides the very strong grip. I think this article is just reminding you to keep turning through the shot and swing through to a full finish, which is easy to neglect and very helpful advice...much like the guy in the "I tried it" blurb at the bottom.

The big difference is that you don't do anthing conciously with the hands or wrists like swatting or rolling over through impact (great when it works but difficult to time consistently) the idea being that the body returns the clubface square far more often and you are a lot straighter, which for me at least, means everytyhing!

I believe this is the classic "single-plane" swing.

I was having all sorts of problems with my irons and happened to try a really strong grip. Started hitting more consistently and at times quite crisply. I did a Google search towards the end of May and found the article Mariner posted in his OP and it confirmed what I had stumbled upon.

At any rate, I like the stronger grip because it takes a lot of thinking out of the mix for me. I don't have time or money for lessons and there's no driving range within 25 minutes. I need a simple swing that I can check a couple of issues when I hit a ball poorly. This works for me. I am hitting all my clubs more consistly and yesterday missed only 3 or 4 fairways, and the misses weren't by much.

I do have to be careful not to intentionally rotate my arms, or a duck hook will ensue. The strong grip seems to rotate automatically the arms.

yeah, the grip is what is helping me so far. I think I'm losing way too much power without any lower body movement, felt like I was just using my arms. What really gave me some power was accelerating through the ball, I know that is what you're supposed to do - but never knew the results would be as good as they ended up.

Still having driver problems - I think only then will I apply the 'body swing' because it makes me feel a bit more relaxed and I'm afraid if I accelerate though the ball like I do the irons, I won't be able to control the ball.

This about.com article shows a much weaker grip than the article which Mariner has in his OP. Also, the about.com shows the grip more in the fingers of the left hand than I am using, FWIW. The handle is in my left hand in the conventional fashion, but I show at least 3 to 3 1/2 knuckles.

The strong grip also helps to eliminate "flapping" the left wrist. I seem to keep the left wrist flatter.
