Re: Try this "body swing" if you are spraying it all over

I need to keep the club in my fingers of my left hand or i end up with a weak grip. the way they show this grip on the web site is about how i hold it. i think that with my hands being so big it is impossible for me to get it in my palm and keep it strong. my wrist bend gets weird or something on my left hand. with the club in the fingers my left thumb actually goes down the shaft on the back side of the club, the rite hand just covers the thumb, it is also in the fingers. it seems to be comfortable for me..

Go have a read of Golf One/Cmays thoughts on the grip. Illuminating stuff

        Thats Is Some Great Stuff...
Some Of The Links From That Post Were Insightfull As Well. The More I Learn Of This Game The More Confused I Get. Although One Thing Stands Out, "comfortable And Relaxed" I Can Atest To The Fact That I Personaly Have Never Hit A Good Golf Shot Without Being Comfortable And Relaxed. I Play With A Guy Who's Swing Look Something Akin To Trying To Put A Ebola Infested Spider Monkey Into A Suit, But He Is Obviously Relaxed And Hits The Ball Great. Go Figure.

I tried it on the back 9 this morning and hit 5 of 9 greens in regulation (I average about 4 per 18 usually) I need to practice the shorter irons on the range though, they went left for some reason?
Again, I have a hard time taking a "strong" grip. It appears that one would have to hold the club more in the palm, instead of the fingers, of the left hand when using a grip as strong as the one shown in this article. Is this correct?

My left hand grip is not in the fingers, but it is not down the middle of the palm, either. The shaft runs from the lower part of the index finger to below the pinky finger.

Contrary to Golfmonkey's larger hands, my are smaller. I'm not sure that has anything to do with it, but perhaps it does.

The right hand, though, finds the shaft in the fingers.

              hi guys,
when i try this method, which is not far away from how i try to swing anyway i keep getting massive hooks or brilliant long drives with a gentle draw.

5 irons with this swing give similar results with no divots as a 16 h/c i want to persevere with swing but in the meantime it looks as though i am going to lose a lot of balls.

              any suggestions.

I'm the same H/cap as you and I changed to this to give me that little bit more consistency to get to the next level.
I hit 6 or 7 great straight drives, then one goes SO wrong (usually a heel) and costs me so much that I end up with exacltly the same score as usual anyway, I hate this game.

Amen to that. One problem I have always had at address, is my shoulders are open, which almost guarantees an "over the top" swing. I was working on 15 or 20 yard pitches last night in my yard, while using a much stronger grip. I noticed that my shoulders were more square. Should a stronger grip help square the shoulders, or am I doing something else wrong now? Also, it appears that the strong grip generated a lot more power, with a lot less effort. I haven't yet tried 1/2 of full swings, but I can see where a bad hook might work it's way into the swing, probably caused by too much wrist action ( trying to use the same amount as I used with a VERY weak grip) with the stronger grip. Any of this make sense?.
Also, there seems to be more "tension" in my left shoulder when using the stronger grip.

Re: Try this "body swing" if you are spraying it all over

Often, my problem when I try something new is, using the late Harvey Penick's illustration, swallowing a whole bottle of aspirins instead of taking just one. Changes are often meant to be more subtle than the massive change we attempt.

When I am using a driver or fairway wood with this stronger grip, I aim toward the right side of the fairway/target (I play right-handed). Often I end up in the middle, but a hook puts me on the left side of the fairway or in the rough. A straight shot put me on the right side of the fairway, and I rarely ever slice with this grip. Being a high handicapper, this has provided some consistency for me, not only in direction but also in striking the ball.

Like Hyper, I find greater distance with less effort. It's taken some adjustment with short pitch shots.

I find that a bad hook arises if I bring the club too far inside too quickly on the backswing. If I start the club straight away from the ball for the first 18 inches or so, I have a straight to draw shot.

something that has really helped me using this strong grip, is throughout my entire swing, I GLUE the inside of left arm to my left chest (right for lefties). This has really helped alot and has kept everything from going over the top on my backswing. From the backswing, i open my hips up by straightening the left leg and then I just let the club drop (lazy-like) and right as soon as I feel that little drop, I accelerate right through the ball. throughtout the entire swing, my left arm is still glued to my left chest.

really starting to make crisp contact with my irons - my driver is struggling because I think I need to make adjustments to ball position.

having just been on the range and course on my own practicing i am finding the shorter backswing combined with a full shoulder turn does the trick.
only thing is i am a pratt and forget this all the time, hence no consistancy, also i cannot lay my left thumb on grip (old injury), it sticks up in the middle so i have to baseball grip and even that feels weird with a really strong grip.

i am not moaning as some blokes with really bad afflictions can play to a high standard (calvin peete, one arm golf soc etc)
