  • 3 wood distance

    hi all
before i start i am more interested in learning to play the game properly than being obsessed with seeing how far i can drive the ball. that being said if all things being equal how far should an average player hit a 3 wood?

What do you hit your Driver? What do you hit your 5w/1i? Should be somewhere in between there. There is no "average" that will make sense to you. If the average of every person who ever played the game at least once hit a 3w, it is probably about 150 yards. So this is rediculas. If the average is of 18 hdcp players, it is probably 200 yards. I am scratch, and hit mine about 250.

      thanks greg
i cant hit my driver straight but when i do i average 240 yds and my 3 iron goes 180/190 think my 3wood average is about 210/220 so that seems okay. the main thing is my 3 wood is "godly accurate"

Here's a more relevant question - how often do you hit your 3 wood on or close to the fairway?

If you hit a 3 wood 200 yrds on the tougest hole on a course (usually something like a 430 yrd Par 4). Then hit a 5 iron 160 yrds - you are only 70 yrds from the green - bump on a 9 iron - 1/2 swing easy and slow (no fancy back spin lob wedges etc.) and then do a "simple" 2 putt you have parr'd the toughest hole on the course - whether your off 1 or 18..... If your off 19, you've just got a birdie.....

I've started to hit my Driver well of late. If I hit it sweet, with a relaxed swing I'm looking at 230/235 of carry. I know this for a fact because I landed on the green on a 210m (230 yrd) par 3 a few weeks ago, from the back of the tee box - and it was a typical drive - not a great contact, but solid. Generally I'll have a strong fade/mild slice on that hole which leaves me 20/30 yrds short of the green on the right. Therefore a poor half sliced shot for my Driver is 200 yrds on a bad swing and 230 on an avaerage one. As far as I'm concerned these distances give me a very strong chance of getting a Par on 90% of Par 4s and Par 5's (off my 17 h'cap).

The only stat I worry about now (because I am content - not proud - but content with my distances) is ---- how many tee shots with my driver ended up giving me a chance of being on the "green in h'cap reg" i.e. 3 shots on a par 4 and 4 shots on a Par 5 to the green...

        SO ---

14 tee shots (on average) with a 3 wood/driver. How many leave you in a position to get on the green in h'cap regulation?

My average would be 11/14 on an average day (have done 13/14, have done 7/14) - not 11 fairways, but 11 good tee shots that give me a strong chance of being on the green in 2 more shots on a Par 4.....

        WHATS YOUR NUMBER?

          Hi delboy,
thanks for your response it makes interesting reading
ive only just started using the 3 wood to drive with as i stink using a driver its a cobra mspeed and suits me down to the ground.have to say i have not analysed the results with it but im confident of hitting most fairways that coupled with using a cobra 4r baffler means i now have a realistic chance of making par on par 4's and 5's whereas before with driver and long iron i had no chance!
im playing 18 holes tonight i'll make some notes

Good luck tonight. I was the same as yourself last year - couldn't touch the driver... But played well off the tee with my 3 wood. But I bought a Ben Hogan CS3 (Draw) and it reduced my slice a lot - and when I'm not playing that well the large head gives me confidence, so all in all the Driver is a better option for me at the moment. I like my Driver which in golf gives confidence and after all the stats and swing mechanics and drills etc. are dead and gone - feeling confident will have you 90% of the way there.....

              thanks mate
this 3 wood is giving me tons of confidence because im always playing second shot on the short stuff and im straighter than my playing partners and at the moment longer!

                    Slats,

You should change your thinking on "cant hit driver". If you can hit three wood well, then apply the same strategy to your driver. Tell yourself you have three wood in your hand, believe, and just do the same three wood swing. See what happens. I tell myself I have 8 iron in my hand for other irons. When I use this mental approach, nine out of ten are crisp.

                      hi robert,
thats not something i would have thought of. i will give it a go at weekend at the range though its going to have to be spot on because i played 18 holes after work tonight and the 3 wood is the dogs b******s i hit every fairway down the middle and the last which is 392 yds long i passed the 150 yd marker probably the sweetest shot ive ever hit!
