  • pulling the irons

    Hi,
I am a left handed golfer. I usually shoot low 80's or high 70's. Lately, ive been pulling my irons. They just go right from the start. I think it is something to do with my grip. I've tried several things...1, ive tried moving my right thumb more toward the center of the grip instead of somewhat off to the side. It does go straight but i seem to lose about 10 yards distance. Also, ive tried standing farther away. When i do this, most of the time i end up hitting a line drive with no divot. Help!

    Dave,

Do you feel like you are like you are completing your backswing. Your timing might be a little off.

Try a little counting drill, on the backswing try counting out loud, "one and" then on e the trough swing count "two".
On the backswing if your through swing starts before you say and it could be a timing issue.

If you think it's your grip look at grip pressure first. You may be getting tight through the swing.

      irons

      hello golfbald,
I dont think it is a timing issue. I believe this because i can hit my woods fine. I think its more to do with the grip or stance. Is it possible that im playing too close to my body and/or too much in the front of my stance. For instance, my 7 iron seems to be the club that pulls the most. Where should it be in my stance. Right now im playing it pretty much in the middle and in front if anything. Thanks!

        Dave,

The ball position sounds right. Humm, Are you hanging on to long before your release? Rotating past straight and then releasing???

Drill: Take some waist to waist swings with your 7 iron. Work on the 180* of the bottom arch. Do this about half speed. Then increase the speed. I use this as a self diagnosis drill when something is out of sequence.

Dave it really doesn't sound like a grip problem, just assume a neutral grip.

          video

          hello golfbald,
I have a video of my swing. However, the attatch file option on this site does not hold the video capacity. Is there any way i can email it to you or something? Thanks again you've been a great help.
