  • 45 degrees to the right

    Hi,

I'm a rank beginner. Bought clubs 2 years ago and got started with a bit of group instruction and I've only been on the course twice with scores not worth recording.
i moved from eastern Canada to Yellowknife a year ago and I'm trying to get back into it. Hit the local course driving range last night for the first time.
My problem before was topping the ball both with driver and irons. Now my 6 iron wasn't all that bad, 100-150 yds and fairly straight. When I switched to my driver I wasn't topping the ball but it took a dozen balls to figure out where it was going because it couldn't see it. It was going high and 45 degrees to the right. Not curving, just going straight on the angle.
I figure my through swing is going out to in and I'm catching the toe of the club. Is there a drill to help me cure this?

Thanks in advance for any help,

    John

play around with your foot position and ball position ... when i slice the ball right, i then to try to hook the ball left, kinda gives you a better feel of your swing

Your definately not getting the club face back to square at impact. If it's just with your driver check your ball position to make sure it's close to being inline with your front foot.

Might need to check your grip as well. If your swing was out to in I would think you would be pull the ball then it would slice right. But with you hitting it straight right it sounds like your path is in to out.

        Thanks,

Makes sense on the in to out, I'll check it out next trip. What I really need is lessons but there is no Pro here now. There is a guy I work with who's played all his life, hopefully he can help.

        Thanks again,

        John

I'm in the same boat. No pro near me either. If you can video tape your swing there are some knowledgeable people here that can help.

I pretty sure you use your arms and hands to "hit" the ball and "make" it fly. I give you my word -> won't work that way. Been there, done it...

I would suggest you get a Leadbetter Video or buy Ben Hogans "Five lessons, the modern fundamentals of golf"<- Also exists on Video.

Greg has done a fantastic job with his website. I would highly recommend it, thanks Greg!

In order to swing the club through the ball, your hands are in a different postion than your hand/eye coordination tells you. The madness of golf...

Oh, btw... regarding the 45 degree shots. Check your Hosel for marks.
Most likely you don't complete you shoulder turn and you let you left elbow fly on the downswing. Anyhow, it all goes back to my previous post.... -> don't "hit" the ball.
