  • Unbelievably Bad Day at the Range

I have had some lessons recently and as usual my swing is completely screwed up. My main problem is the big stick, the driver. I am all over the place. At the driving range last week I was working on some things with the driver and hit my first two drives really well. Then I hit a horrible shot which felt like I struck the ball right on the hozzle. I did this 15 or 20 times in a row. No matter what I did I could not come close to hitting ball on the club face. There is no way I could ever have envisioned hitting the ball that bad so many times in a row even if purposely. Clunk, clunk, clunk. Crazy. I finally after some time of working on it noticed I was lifting my left foot on the back swing. That helped a bit but not great. Also, I broke a tee on practically every shot. On subsequent times at the range this hasn't occured very much at all but I am just crazy wild with the driver off the tee. No consistency. Any ideas?

My other clubs are OK, not great but OK. Nothing near the problems with the driver.

try and think of keeping everything still from the waist down. Glue your feet to the ground. This should eliminate any improper movement and improve your bodycoil. If you can get this as a routine it should help you improve overall. Hope this helps.

Go back to the fundamentals, grip, posture, alignment, tempo etc. Trust that you know if you have played well for awhile what to do. Don't get so caught up in one bad day at the range, focus on good things that you already know how to do and the rest will come.
No one can give you really sound advice on any forum; the little tips here and there can help certainly and often times they do.
If the problem persists, have a pro take 30 minutes to look at things and go from there.
I would hazard a guess your tempo was off.

Every time i thought i found out what is wrong with my swing, something else breaks.

The problem i see is my downswing. My hands moves faster than my hips. just can't control it.

Just focus on keeping the grip pressure light and completing your backswing. Also, make yourself stay behind the ball(more with driver, woods and long irons-less so with irons).
              Here's a drill:
As you start your downswing, try to imagine pointing the butt end of the club down the ball to target line, this will keep you from racing ahead and you should get good contact with lag.
Let me know, if this doesn't work, there are a few other things to try but lets keep it real simple.

I went out yesterday and the problem is still there a bit but better. Still highly inconsistent with the driver. My irons felt greatt at first but something is causing me to open the club face. I think I need to concentrate on staying behind the ball on impact, I maybe sliding a bit. But my goal was to get a proper posture at set up and maintain the line in the backswing taking the club back primarily with the shoulder turn rather than swinging the arms back to keep everything together. This definitely helped on the irons but like I've said got find out what is causing me to open the clubface. When I hinge the wrists properly it helps but that is not the only problem.
