There is lot mentioned about swatting and testimonies too. I believe there must be some truth to it. But do the pros do it this way too? Personally it is very difficult for me to observe mechanics when swinging or restrict the free flow. Not that I am scratch player or something but it amazes me when people go into so much details...Gregg pls. explain.

Re: Swat?
Not swatting does not restrict a free flow. What is free to you now may be the feeling of letting the hands swat, but once you feel what a non-swat does to the ball, you will be a beliver soon enough. Consistancy AND power. What else do you want? Swatting may feel like power, but it robs consistancy.

Re: Swat?
Yes. If you look at the position of the leading arm at impact, it will be straight. The trailing arm will be bent in relation to the shaft (like a "y" - looking face on to a right hander).
After impact, and slightly short of parallel to the ground, it will stay in this position, until the leading side breaks down and the trail arm extends fully to reverse this position.
The only time it will be ok to swat is in an extream draw situation, where the face needs to be closed down hard. I practice this shot and have it timed so I release this cupped position very early and hooks-away!

Re: Swat?
Any use of the hands through impact is bad. Swatting/Hitting/Flipping whatever you call it. No pro does it. Their right arms are bent at impact. You get this by rotating your body on the downswing and leaving your hands and arms loose and floppy

Re: Swat?
Its funny, for about the last 2 months or so I have been trying to stop the swat and keep the cup in my swing.
For some reason I find it much easier to do with my driver than my irons.
I am able to do it most with the driver and the results are crazy, long teardrop and straight.
I can also kinda do it with my longer irons (it seems when I sweep I do it better) but short irons I have a real problem with.
That said i find if I can do it once it comes easier and easier, just trying to "find" it the first time is the killer...

Re: Swat?
It's not "funny", that is truth. What you describe is very normal. The reason it is easier to hold the angle in a longer club (like your driver) is because the ball position is forward. This permotes the idea that the trailing hand has to "come to" the leading hand and that position creates the cupped position right off the bat. Maintaining it is easy to see and feel. The short clubs have the ball in the middle to slightly back, so you have to manufacture this position by relaxing the trail hand and forarm to create the cup.
This cupped position is not overly pronounced...not something that may actually be "seen" and measured from someone's setup. Even if you setup with a flat trail wrist position, you can still have the correct impact position if you do not swat through impact....which is the point of this thread. Causing the clubhead to beat the rest of the body's full rotational potential is a power killer AND a way to spray it all over the course if not timed perfectly. Why would you ever want to risk that?Last edited by GregJWillis; 06-13-2006, 02:48 PM.

Re: Swat?
Gregg,
If the cupped is not very pronounced, how can I tell if I swat or not ? Can you tell from the link below if I swat or not ?
