  • Normans Secret & Right Hand drill

    Hi,
I bought Normans secret but I feel that it places my hands in an incredible cupped position.
When I address the ball I find it very difficult to maintain this severe cupped position.
When I swing the elastic strapping to my wrist simply stretches and allows swatting.
    How should zi continue ?
Should I duct tape to my arm and keep this severe cupped position ?
You've guessed it; I scoop the ball with a very high flight !
    Help me pls

I have just heard recently that the duct tape is an option. I have never tried that, but someone who was a cronic swatter said it worked.

Relax the trail arm and wrist. Let the arm fold into this postion against your hip a bit. Your leading arm will be "over" the trail arm (from the behind view).

Start with simple chip shots. Then when this feel better, work up to a fuller swing.

      Thanks Greg,
But when I swat at the ball I also tend to leave the clubface open at impact.
If I relax the trail hand would this not compound my misery ?
When I strike the ball I think I am still square to the ball, should my shoulders and hips be more open and turned to the ball, if so would this help eliminate my swatting ?

Absoutly. Look at my Impact drill.

You need to be as open to the target at impact as your flexability will allow. And the secret will feel right at home in your grip.

I bought "The Secret" too but I couldn't get used to it.

It felt too awkard. I couldn't even hold the club with it on !

However I agree about the right hand drill theory. It is the secret to straight hitting !

I have had Greg Normans Secret for about 18 months, and I have to say I have been a little disappointed.

I think the main problem for me (and it appears for others on here), is actually putting the Secret on and addressing the ball. I have seen Greg Norman's instructional video that accompanies the secret, and have to say it is very poor, mainly because he does not describe actually how to use it. For instance, how it should be fitted, and how it feel or be positioned at address.

I am OK with it it on during the swing, beacuse as I swing the club I can get my right hand into position to the mould of the secret by the time I am at the 9 o'clock position. Is it OK to have some slack with the elastic when you address the ball and find the angle during your swing.

It maybe worthwhile somebody posting a video on the site showing the Secret in action (Greg Willis seems to be the expert on it ) , in terms of it putting it on going through the swing slowly to see it in action. Unfortunately Greg Norman did not do this.

              Greg,

First of all, love the impact drill!

On your site you are obviously exaggerating the “cupped” position in the right hand drill. You mention that several times. Just so I am clear….

              1) It seems like you want the left wrist to ONLY move up and down. And that the top of the left wrist and the top of the left forearm should always be in line. Is that a correct statement?
              2) How should the grip be aligned? You know the whole “v’s” of the hands thing. I think that might clear some things up for some people.

              Thanks!

Re: Normans Secret & Right Hand drill

The Left wrist moves more vertically then the right, yes...but you will see a little rolling of the right forarm and slight wrist hinge to coinside with the left wrist hinging up/down.

Top of left wrist and left forarm should always stay in line, yes. If they were not, then you are hinging the left wrist horizontally (left/right) i.e. swatting.

V of the right hand pointing over center to left shoulder.
V or the left hand pointing center to right shoulder.
All depending on your desired strength.

So getting the right hand more on top of the club is the desired position. The right now gets to be used like a hammer pushing down on the club...the Up/Dn action. There is no need to have any side-to-side movement, so any grip position "from" the side is a waste of potential wrist snap and action.

The feeling I like to instill at setup is the ability to use your hands to take the club and push it straight down into the ground. Lift straight up, and pop it back down. When your grip feels comfortable and solid there, you are ready to hit the ball.

Re: Normans Secret & Right Hand drill

I just looked about about 15 swing motions. It amazing that I never really noticed that "cup" before.

I think my problem, and its probably a problem many others have, is having my right hand too far under the club.

I took a couple swings out in the parking lot and I got my right hand more on top of my left thumb. I remember reading an article by Jim Flick about making a vacuum tight connection on top. I was able to achieve that "cup" or "lag" in a matter of 3 or 4 swings.

No wonder I have been hitting them fat. Bottoming out way too early!

Thanks! Nice instruction! Now if I could keep my bloody right elbow more connected I would be set!

Re: Normans Secret & Right Hand drill

I recently purchased a Greg Norman Secret and used it for the first time on the range this past Tuesday. I must say it did help me make better contact with the back of the ball; the scoop was gone. I was getting 5-10 more yards on each of my shots, honestly. And my accuracy improved greatly.

I would try it for about 15-20 balls then take it off for another 15-20 balls, and this routine really helped me focus on keeping my right wrist cupped on contact.

It's a bit difficult to get accustomed to at first, but after a while I realized how to use it...............just relax and don’t fight it as Norman says.

Re: Normans Secret & Right Hand drill

The most difficult part of Greg's RHD or the Norman Secret is taking it to the course. It took me a couple of rounds to get it consistently, but I still have the tendency to come out of a shot because I still get in a hurry to hit it. Losing the cupping on the downswing is very bad..........very bad!

However, the biggest improvement you will see IMO is that you will have a lot more birdie putts inside of 10 feet, because you are able to hit it so straight.

Re: Normans Secret & Right Hand drill

I have used The Secret along with Gregs drills with great success. I think the drills were most helpful. My Secret has gotten so much action the elastic is wearing out. The duct tape sounds like a good idea. I was hitting the ball the best in my life with this approach last year. Unfortunately I live in Chicago and did not swing a club for 5 months this winter and have "lost it".
                        The search continues.

I used the secret last night on the practice ground. I can get the thing on. When I set up to the ball, however the part above the wrist that rests of the lower forearm there is a slight gap (less than 1cm) is this OK ? The only way I can get all the angle set is by pushing my arms very far forward as though I am playing a cricket shot, which signficantly reduces club loft.

I had the same problem at first, I eventually just allowed the slight gap to appear. I tested my swing through contact to see if the 'secret' was still tight enough to prevent my right wrist from losing its cup, I determined it was secure enough even with the small gap around the wrist.

When I tried to tighten it more I thought my finger was going to break off.

frosty1s, move down here to Georgia where you can play almost 10 months of the year or more, but playing in late June through July is a bit of a challenge with 100 degree temps.

There are also so many courses down here you can walk-on late most of the time and still get a tee time.
