  • Improved swing motion creates new issue..

Just recently, I improved my swing motion. I am making a much better hip turn which is producing shots that are straight or drawing. I am finally swinging more from "in a barrell" than ever before (used to fight weight transfer and sway problems).

One thing I have never struggled with is a "push". I am getting a fair number of slight pushes (I am right handed). Granted, these pushes are much better misses than my previous slices or hard pulls. Just trying to learn what is causing them. I don't think it is ball position. I am wondering if I am quitting on the shot a bit too early.

Any comments or suggestions regarding pushes???

A push would signify that you are approaching the ball from the inside (which is good) and your clubface is square to the path. (i.e. open). Try strengthening your grip a little by moving both hands on the grip slightly to the right at address without moving the clubface. If you go to the range and move your hands in this way little by little you should get your draw back, if you move them too far (i.e. more than 3 knuckles showing on the left hand) you will hit hooks.

I have recently dealt with this and fixed it. Try this. When you start your downswing, make sure that your weight transfer (more of a bump) and hip turn are down the target line. I'm guessing that right now your transfer and hip turn is to the right. This produces an in to out swing path resulting in a push or push draw or push slice, depending on the club face position. Really try to turn your hips early while doing this. Try this and let me know if it helps.

Changing your grip will only change the club position at impact. It will not eliminate a push or inside to out swing path. It will change the push to a push hook but won't fix the inside out path.

            A couple of possibilities:

            - Try not to have your hands too far forward at setup. Experiment by moving your hands closer to the middle.

            - Is it possible that your head is moving forward towards the target at impact? Try to keep it in its proper position through the downswing.
