  • Desperate for advice

I've tried everything to stop slicing my driver and nothing is working.

I was already decent with my irons and recently came across Greg Willis and his right-hand and impact drill. My irons are now even better - I am way more consistant and my ability to aim and be accurate with my irons is way better than it's ever been.

The whole purpose I started with was to stop slicing my driver but alas I still slice the ball 80% of the time. I went over grip (v pointing at shoulder) the right hand drill and impact drill as mentioned earlier and none of it is helping with my slice on the driver - what's different that I'm missing. My irons are sweet now but my inability to hit a decent driver off the tee is easily costing me 10 strokes. I can hit in the high 80 now but I could really take that next step if I could hit the big stick.

Is lessons really my only hope as I need someone to actually see my swing or is there something I'm not aware of that a driver slicer like me usually runs into that differs from the irons? I know the issue is open face or outside to inside swing from what I have read. What can I try to A) be able to determine if the problem is the open face or the swing plane or b) fix the issue?

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Re: Desperate for advice

Your path is probably too "out-to-in" on the driver. Change that path and you will be hitting nice easy draws.

So how to change the path?

It's in your takaway, bringing the club slightly more into your body, rotating fully, then pushing out and away from your body slightly into impact.

"Slightly" being key. Too much and all hell breaks loose. Don't loose the cup in the right wrist. Keep the path "In-to-Out" using your arms in respect to the body as the regulator.

If you want to slice a driver (I know you don't now, but if you need it on a shot), push the arms out and away "slightly" and pull them in on the downswing.

This path change works the same on all clubs too by the way.

Sanders: Check your fundamentals but especially your grip and takeaway.
Make sure the right hand is over to the right of center where at least the palm is facing the target or even under the club until you get over this.
Also, make sure takeaway is low, slow, almost pulling you off balance but stopping short of that to make sure weight transfer is happening. Exaggerate these things until you get through the slices, then you can throttle back.
Keep grip pressure extremely light to make sure you give your hands and wrists every opportunity to hinge and work together.
These things are very simple and they will in fact get you to square the clubface; afterall, you are slicing because you cannot square the clubface so focus on that.
