  • Help With Dodgy Thumb

the thumb on my left hand (i am right habded) will not sit on grip, it sticks up in the middle like the bridge on the 18th at st andrews.

this causes all sorts of problems with grip and i have to grip baseball stylie, even then the top of my right hand bangs against thumbnail. pros i have used seem to be confused by this and cant really help, one day i am (or think i am) playing like a pro, miles off tee, great approach shots etc, and another day the grip feels odd and i am hacking around.

i try every combination of thumb postition and basically try to hide thumb over on left side of grip which i know is incorrect for consistancy.

has any of you guys come across this before, sometimes i feel like packing the game in i am so frustrated i cant hold the club the same way every time.

    help please guys.

thanks for getting back so quick greg, will get a pic as soon as. basically 2 1/2 knuckels on left hand but cant get thumb to sit on right edge of club grip because of old injury, every instruction manual gets you to lay left thumb on club grip and place right hand over.

when i try this i get a massive gap between club and middle of thumb (like a bridge).

just wondered whether you pros have had pupils with dodgy left thumbs before and how they overcame problem.

i am sure this lttle problem is stopping me getting down to a ten eleven h/c (currently 15.6.

I have had some very unusual ones, yes.
Here's my firt crack at it:

Wrap a gause folded up under your thumb in the position where it would meet the grip. Tape it but not too tight. And try swinging. You will feel the connection to the grip and allow your thumb to be in it's natural possition.

Try different compounds. Maybe a spounge cut the the right shape? Bike helemts come with pad inserts, and those are very absorbing, that might be waterproof too.

You might cut the thumb on your glove out and use a very large glove's thumb where you insert the pading in there and re-attach that to the regular glove...makeshift thumb insert so to speak.

Ok. get a hammer rebreak thumb and have the doctor cast it around a club shaft.

            hey gm,
believe me i have considered this several times, often felt like chopping the damn thing off it gets in the way so much.

tried the wadding yesterday without much joy but will try again. i play pretty good most of the time then half through a round it will feel really odd again and you know with a golf swing if somthng feels wrong you aint gonna hit a decent shot.

what works best is the motorcycle grip with the left thumb tucked over the left near its closest finger, only way of getting right hand on club, real pain in the arse.

              Re: Help With Dodgy Thumb

Ok, something very radical comming so the weak of stomach might want to hide their eyes:

              ...
              ...
              ...

              Change sides.

              ...
              ...
              ...

The lefty setup will have your left thumb in the "don't care" plsition on top of the right...it can just hang out there while your right thumb gets all the attention.

You will start all over, and the short game will suffer the most, but I bet after a month on the range you will get solid connections with your 7i and probably about 90% of your normal distance. Another month will get the 3w airborn from the deck and you will start to cure that slice off the driver the next month.

Depending on your ability to practice, I can bet you will be playing on the course at the end of the year.
