  • Chili Dip

I was playing a terrible round yesterday, mostly due to severe shanking of my short iron shots (8,9, PW, SW). The ball would take off in almost a 90 degree angle. I guy in my foursome said I was dropping my right shoulder, or chili dipping. I've heard this term before but never realized what it meant. Shanking has crept its way into my iron play and lately it seems that I'm swinging tentatively because of it.

Are there some drills that I can practice to aid this problem?

    Thanks

Try swinging with your body weight displaced on both heels. You may be leaning on your toes. The S's can be a mystery at times.

      Hi dfix.

i really do sympathise with you. Shanking can destroy your confidence and frustrate the hell out of you becuase it appears , seemingly, out of the blue. but the good news is YOU ARE NOT ALONE. A shank can happen to anybody at anytime and nobody is immune, from begginer to tour pro.

Now, as i always say when giving advice about a swing fault, to cure a fault you first have to understand the causes.

So, what is the major cause of the golf shank? Well, invariably it is caused by an incorrect weight distribution during the swing, specifically too much of the players weight goes onto the toes during the downswing causing the ball to impact the club face off-center towards the hosel of the club, shooting the ball right at a 90 degree angle.( right handers ).

The simple way to fix the golf shanks is to concentrate on keeping the weight on the heels during the swing. For a more permanent golf shank cure it is worth spending some time checking your spine angle at address and maintaining this angle throught the swing and making sure that you have a full shoulder turn on the backswing with a relaxed grip.

As a quick fix on the course just address the ball more towards the toe of the clubface.

please let me know how you get on . i am always here to help.
