  • Reverse Pivot

    Hi,
My swing seems to be all arms with a reverse pivot.
Straightening of my right leg during the backswing is a problem and finishing my swing with the weight on my right leg.
I play off 16 but know I can do better.
Tee shots are my real weakness.
    Any idea or drills ?
    Help me pls
    Tunny

    Re: Reverse Pivot

    Tunny,
Sounds like you have a typical problem.
At time I also have a reverse pivot and have been working on a better take away.
I have been trying to keep the flex in my knees while turning my shoulders.
Its tough....maybe somebody has a good tip.
Anyway, keep the knees flexed and maintain spine angle.

      Re: Reverse Pivot

Move your head some inches to the right ( you play right handed ) at the beginning of your swing (takeaway), and see what happens.

      Give it a try.

      Hope this help.

        Re: Reverse Pivot

Your right leg must not straighten out during any part of the swing. To rid of this, imagine that a bar stool is behind you and you squat down slightly resting your bum on the edge of the stool. Stay in this position (vertically anyway) throughout your swing. Do not raise up from the stool squat position and the right leg should be flexed throughout the swing. Do this and transfer your weight from middle to right side to middle through to the left side at follow through. If weight transfer is correct, you should be able to pick up your right foot and still remain standing in balance.

Try this for a drill on the driving range. Take a golf ball and place it under your right foot (outside part of your shoe) and hit balls. This will prevent you from rolling to the outside of the right foot that is caused by reverse pivoting. It worked for me when I started playing and now I never reverse pivot.

          Re: Reverse Pivot

Make sure you get your weight onto your right side in the back swing. It helps with getting it back to the left on the down swing.

            Re: Reverse Pivot

Have you ever watched a discus thrower perhaps? They really wind up the torso and weight onto the right, back to the target and then unwind with everything coming from the right and through to target ...

That's the same idea you want in a golf swing ... Swing back getting your back facing the target, all the weight onto a flexed right knee (like a discus thrower) shoulders titled and thr left shoulder under your chin ...

Practice the movement to get the feeling as if you were going to through a discus or frisbee with your right hand. Sounds an odd thing to practice but trust me it works. I use it often in teaching students how to get rid of a reverse pivot.

              I like Graham's answer, that's a good idea.

I would work on keeping your right knee flexed for the whole swing and see what happens first, pretend your sitting against a wall.
