Ok, as a mid/high 80s to low 90s player that wants to be a mid/high 70s to low 80s player, here is what I’ve learned with age. Please understand that I am a veteran tennis play of some 30+ years where I learned to hit em’ hard as hell so the golf learning curve has been difficult.

With Relaxation being a (1), and Tension being a (10)

2 Head – allow it to move to the left slightly but not so much that you end up swaying to the outside, also never down
5 Shoulders (perhaps should be a 3) – as a tennis player I need to learn to keep my shoulders quiet, this is very difficult for a tennis player.

5 Arms – slight tension inward without causing tension in the shoulders
As Greg said, the right arm has less tension 4 or 3 perhaps.

4 Wrist – this one has always been a bit of a mystery to me. I say 4 because there should be enough tension to feel contact with the ball without causing the club head to move off its path.

4 Hands – as I’ve read it’s like holding a babies hand. I heard that a famous player (I don’t recall his name) easies his grip just before he moves the club back so he doesn’t create tension on the downswing. Also maintain enough tension to keep all parts of the inner part of the hand connected to the grip.

4 Torso – just enough to create a slight pull against the lower body

3+ Waist – Just enough to allow the torso to turn

5 Legs – enough to create a tension against the upper body on the backswing and feel that turn around the right leg. Maintain a strong lower foundation through the ball as Greg Norman says.

5 Feet – maintain firm footing on the inside of the right foot on the backswing so you don’t sway outside.

Now I’m not a scratch player, so this is just part of my learning curve. My numbers may be slightly different because I’ve been told I have a strong upper body (tennis and a few years of boxing).

Al, i know you mean well but please understand , any feelings of tension are POST SWING and becuase the golf swing is over so fast it is impossible to attribute feelings of TENSION to any specific part of the swing. If you feel tension PRE swing then that is an entirely different matter to feeling TENSION post-swing . i have taught this game for many years on one level or another. forget TENSION. learn to trust the swing you have or you will be inviting TENSION into your swing.

My numbers were post swing...sitting at address. Once I take the club back, there are going to be changes in numbers that just flow into making a my personal swing work my swing.

This is what I suspect you were looking for...post swing setup, right?

Exactly, thanks Greg. Once we're set properly it seems to be much easier to 'unconsciously' maintain the varying degrees of feel throughout the swing.

Sorry if I didn't explain it better; but then I'm not a scratch player.

If you want to know how to play the trumpet, inline down a steep hill or throw a proper uppercut I can offer better advice.

                    AL .
you have my total respect. my brother is a very profficient tennis player and is always kicking my butt. the only time i ever better him is on the golf course, this is only because ( like you ) i have played the game for 30+ years, and i'm still learning, but i love it.

                    wish you well

To Much To Think About In Such A Short Time It Takes To Swing The Club.

Beginners Need To Concentrate On The Basics

                      Gasp : Meaning,

                      Grip
                      Aim
                      Stance
                      Posture

And The Short Game Putting ,chipping, And Pitching.

The Secret To Golf Is That There Is No Secret.

Re: Question for all the scratch, or almost scratch players out there.

                        Guys,

There is some really deep comments here, when Greg has answered the question very simply, Al is asking what various body part should feel at address, this is very important for any golfer, ever been for a lesson and the pro says your to tense, or your grip is to tight................how does he know...........simple, because your knuckles are white and you look like your strangling a cat before you even start to swing. Whenever your about to hit something it is natural to tense slightly, just try to remember the ball weighs as much as a little bird and doesn't need brute force.

                        Al,

At set-up I try to keep all my body relaxed and tention free, the only part I have any force over is my hips and bum, I always stick it out and hold it "firm"
through the swing, I take the club back tention free................then unfortunatley I can't tell you what happens after that the ball is in the air.

                        Hope this helps.

                        Ian.

                          I wish I was a scratch player !

I started the season on 5.2 handicap but I've only played 3 qualiflying rounds so far this year. During the winter all our medals are non qualiflying for some reason. I had a 73 gross and lost .2 but had 2 bad rounds and went back to 5.2 again.

There are so many things that come into play in a medal. Even if your game is spot on.

                          1. The weather - The wind usually makes it 5 shots harder
                          2. The course - Poor greens, silly flag positions, rock hard greens etc
                          3. Playing partners - It is quite hard to concentrate when your playing partners are moaning about their luck or saying they want to go home or quit the game etc.

These are not excuses but valid reasons why my handicap isn't going down. Oh well, one day I suppose

                            Puttking,

I think it's difficult when you have thoses sort of problems on comp days, I play with the same partners most comps simply because we know each others games, my regular partner plays of +2 so I supose it's easier for me.

However I do agree 100% that a tour pro would struggle to play to 5 on our course when we have so many poor lies in bunkers, poor greens most of the year and on our course we tend to have long rough which knocks a few more shots off, and thats to say nothing about British weather, last time Tiger played here in the pouring rain he shot 81.

5 is a great h/capp don't knock yourself, besides we only come down 0.1 for every shot under par, with poor conditions its difficult.

                              Thanks for your reply.

Your right about course conditions. Our greens at the moment are basically unplayable. They are rock hard and you can't stop the ball on them. And when the flags get put at the front of the green then forget it !
Your either short and chipping up or thru the green if you land the ball on the green. I think the best conditions are in Sept / Oct when you have firm fairways and softish greens.

I have around 12 medals left this season. The thing is my average this season is 74 gross, 4 over but the problem is doing it when it counts: ie Medal days !
